Laboratory Specialist

Description

The Materials Testing Analyst is responsible for maintaining the material quality assurance program, which is accomplished through on-site manufacturing inspections, incoming material sampling inspections, and material analysis and reporting of in-service material failures. The Materials Testing Analyst is also responsible for lab activities in support of testing and evaluating new materials to be used in the gas system. This position will also evaluate new technologies and assist in the implementation, tracking and reporting on status of the technology being introduced. Analyst responds to corporate-wide, material-based requests for technical support.

Functional Expertise:

• Establishes testing protocols for tools and materials with guidance from industry standards such as ASTM, ANSI and API. Conducts testing and ensures all laboratory equipment is maintained to the appropriate standards.

• Develops and implements statistical sampling of incoming materials to ensure material quality. Compares sampling results against the product requirements specified in the purchase order.

• Sets criteria and operates equipment and tools in order to evaluate their performance.

• Conducts root-cause analysis of in-use materials/tools deemed defective or to have failed.

• Writes formal, analytical communications including approval reports, corrective action reports, material standards, procedures, and operating manuals.

• Performs gas analysis utilizing gas chromatography

• Collects and organizes data on material and tool performance. Compares actual performance to published expectations and enterprise needs.

Engagement:

• Collaborates with Materials Engineer(s) in the preparation of laboratory and field tests, data analysis, and reporting required for evaluation of new products, materials, and technologies.

• Prepares communication plan in regards to the introduction of new products, changes to existing products, and material failure analysis response.

• Responds to internal requests enterprise-wide for technical support as it relates to materials, system components, purging requirements, and gas composition.

• Interacts with third party labs for specialized testing.

Driving Results:

• Monitors material performance to service level and listed standards

• Ensures tests are conducted to meet customers' scope and project deadlines

• Conducts on-site manufacturing inspections to ensure vendor compliance with specified requirements of the material being purchased.

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

Analyst / Senior Analyst

• Associate's Degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience in manufacturing, laboratory, or industrial testing environment

Engineer / Engineer, Intermediate

• BA/BS in recognized engineering discipline

Preferred:

• Training in product testing procedures

• EIT or Professional Engineering License

  Related Work Experience:

Description

* THIS IS A BELOW GROUND POSITION

Entry level position as a member of a crew engaged in installing, maintaining, and repairing gas mains and service lines. Performs basic tasks including operating heavy equipment, using hand tools, basic leak investigation, assisting in mechanical joining, landscape maintenance and traffic control. Responsible for completing a variety of tasks in support of field operations to include deactivation of service, delayed match, corrosion inspections, meter paints, reading meters and assisting with other maintenance activities as needed. Performs meter reading, ERT installations and ERT programming in conjunction Automated Meter Reading duties. This is a bargaining unit position (IBEW Local 1997). This position will have an automatic progression pursuant to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES

• Provides assistance with all distribution activities involved with the installation, repair and maintenance of the distribution system to include:

• Operating basic equipment and tools

• Traffic control

• Landscaping and general maintenance

• Digging, shoring, repairing leaks, testing and wrapping pipes

• Pressure recording devices

• Uses a variety of tools (hand, air, shovels, etc.) while performing distribution crew activities.

• Ensures truck is stocked with equipment, supplies, tools and other equipment in neat and orderly condition.

• Efficiently works a route to complete customer and compliance orders in a timely manner and in accordance with company policies and procedures and operator qualifications procedures.

• Observes all safety requirements and regulatory guidelines to ensure compliance.

• Actively and accurately captures documentation in the Mobile Data Terminal and recognizes abnormal operating conditions such as corrosion, meters under stress, etc.

• Assists in connecting and disconnecting gas service, manually turning meters on and off.

• Assists in conducting investigations of high bill complaints, stop meters and special readings by meter reading validation.

• Assists in performing regular meter inspections, paints and maintenance of above and below ground gas systems.

• Responds to questions from customers and provides answers directly or by referral.

• Operates Automated Dispatch system to complete meter reads and turn-offs service at customer's premise.

• Identifies abnormal operating conditions and takes appropriate actions.

• Performs simple sniff tests to detect gas leaks.

• Performs other job-related duties as required.

The candidate will develop and implement solutions that support advanced threat detection and deterrence of cyber adversaries. The focus will be primarily on external cyber threats. The Team Lead will leverage his/her experience with threat analysis and cybersecurity engineering, overseeing the work of a small team, and managing projects. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead the day-to-day innovation, process, capability development and operations of the team

• Develop operational strategies for cyber deterrence, including honeypots, deception campaigns, internal controls, and countermeasures

• Develop prototype capabilities for deterrence within an Operational Technology (OT) environment, to include advanced laboratory development for testing

• Research, collect, and analyze strategic and operational intelligence on cyber threats to the energy sector and Southern Company

• Contribute to the deployment of alerting solutions based on cyber deterrence activities and integrate those alerts with existing Security Operation Center (SOC) processes

• Communicate alerts on potential cyber intrusions to other teams and stakeholders

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• BA/BS in computer science, technology, engineering or cyber security-related field or equivalent experience

• Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant professional security experience, or six (6) years with Master's degree

• Prior experience working in a cybersecurity operations environment

• Independent thinker with strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills

• Understanding of attack signatures, tactics, techniques and procedures associated with advanced cyber threats

• Experience with digital forensics tools to determine adversary actions taken during a cyber intrusion event

• ALARA program

• outage preparation and execution

• radioactive waste management

• shipping of radioactive waste/material

• Process Control Program

• Implementing special projects to improve health physics

• Tracking/Trending all radiological data related to plant performance indicators

• Benchmarking industry on health physics issues and site performance

• Providing technical support for the Health Physics department, including assessments of internal dose/whole body counting, skin dose and shielding; compliance with all regulatory requirements

• Substituting as Health Physics Manager as required - qualification as per ANSI 3.1 - 1993

• radioactive waste management

• shipping of radioactive waste/material

• Process Control Program

• Implementing special projects to improve health physics

• Tracking/Trending all radiological data related to plant performance indicators

• Benchmarking industry on health physics issues and site performance

• Providing technical support for the Health Physics department, including assessments of internal dose/whole body counting, skin dose and shielding; compliance with all regulatory requirements

• Substituting as Health Physics Manager as required - qualification as per ANSI 3.1 - 1993

• Ensuring that ALARA committee meetings are held quarterly; preparing agenda and tracking actions

• Maintaining the ALARA suggestion program

• Serving as an on-call HP Supervisor

• Filling the Emergency Response Organization positions of dose analyst or TSC HP Supervisor

JOB DESCRIPTION

This position is responsible for the design of Electrical Transmission and Distribution Substations. The Designer/Engineer will produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for substation projects with emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs. This position will require some travel (approximately 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service. Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

• Prepare high quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) electrical substations using CAD-based tools, adhering to Southern Company design standards.

• Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction. Some overnight travel will be required.

• Participate in substation design review meetings.

Education

The engineer/analyst role in the IRP group will support development of the Southern Electric System Generation Expansion Plan and for supporting the retail operating companies in 1) the annual development of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), 2) preparing major portions of the operating company IRP and generation certification regulatory filings and supporting needs related to the IRP and certification regulatory and business processes, 3) determining Intercompany Interchange Contract (IIC) Capacity Recognition as well as other IIC Reserve Sharing support, 4) development of the retail capacity price forecast used by generation, OpCo marketing and customer choice, and 5) various other generation economic analysis and planning work related to Southern Company's generation resources.

This position works closely with various organizations and all levels of the SCS and Retail Operating Company operating and planning organizations, so the successful candidate must be able to effectively communicate complex concepts clearly and concisely with diverse audiences.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (specific to each position)

Responsibilities for each position include (but are not limited to) the following:

• Development of the System and individual Retail Operating Company capacity expansion plans, using Aurora, that are used to evaluate major future supply-side and demand side decisions.

• Support operating company IRPs, rate cases, capacity certifications, and other filing requests

• Support strategic planning activities and conduct internal analyses for key state or federal initiatives impacting the planning process. (e.g., GHG reduction initiatives)

• Development of IIC capacity recognition data to support IIC financial settlement for the operating companies.

• Development of the retail capacity price forecast used throughout the company to value capacity when making major supply side and demand side decisions.

• Create, maintain, integrate, and optimize analytical tools related to data management and reporting.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Finance, Economics, or an equivalent analytical field is required

• Experience or understanding of power system (or related) modeling and optimization efforts. Prior experience with Aurora (electric system modeling software from Energy Exemplar) is a plus

• Understanding of production cost principles

• Proven analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex topics verbally and in written form

• Knowledge of integrated resource planning, power plant operations, power pool operations, utility finance (including revenue requirements and cash flow analysis), generation economic evaluation, engineering economics and related computer modeling desired

Reports to: Dan Burer, Forestry & R/W Manager

Location: Atlanta Area, can be mostly remote; Successful candidate must currently live in Georgia or able to relocate. Some relcation assistance may made available based on circumstances.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for leading a team of employees and consultants that performs many of the support functions for FROW field operations. Key areas include procurement, project controls, business intelligence, technology, and customer communication.

Position will manage the sourcing and renewal of vendor service contracts. Candidate should have knowledge of CAMP and Supply Chain processes. Manages financial transactions like unregulated billing and check requests.

This position will track and communicate financial performance, including monthly spending and workplan progress. Will be directly involved in the development of the Condition Based Maintenance workplan for distribution; supports the transmission workplan from a systems and reporting standpoint.

The business office manager is also responsible for ensuring the organization is enabled by technology, maintaining the systems used by the organization on daily and delivering value-added enhancements to drive operational excellence.

This position will develop and maintain relationships with multiple stakeholders including leadership in other business units and contract vendors. Candidate must provide leadership to team, develop employees, and manage employee performance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Educational/Certification Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Computer Science, Engineering, Accounting, or related discipline is required. Graduate degree preferred.

Experience Desired:

• Experience with service contract development and administration

• Supervising others

• Scheduling, budgeting, and financial reporting

• Internal or vendor sourced application development and support

• Experience in utility field operations and/or directly supporting field operations.

• Proven record of successful teamwork with corporate support organizations (SCM, AFT, TO, SCS, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to get technical work done through others

• Knowledge of sophisticated business intelligence tools like Power BI and Tableau. Ability to manage connections/integrations with numerous otherwise disconnected systems.

• Knowledge of CAMP and other Key Financial Applications

• GIS and Customer Information System knowledge a plus

• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and networking skills - must have the ability to effectively communicate at all levels

• Innovative mindset with proven process improvement experience

• Understanding of remote sensing technologies like satellite imagery and LiDAR.
