Job Description
Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
Basic Qualifications
2 Years with Bachelors in Science; 0 Years with Masters- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Preferred Qualifications
This position is for a Structural Engineer 2 in the A1B Propulsion Plant Planning Yard (PPPY; Department E70) supporting the construction, maintenance, overhaul, and modernization of CVN78 Class aircraft carriers.
The Engineer candidate will perform dynamic structural (shock) analyses utilizing finite element analysis (FEA) methods with the pre-/post-processor FEMAP and ABAQUS computer applications, perform hand calculations using textbook methods, and develop engineering calculation reports, customer submittal letters, support the development of ship alterations (ShipAlts) and Nuclear Liaison Inquiry (NLIs). Interface with Construction Engineering and Trades to mitigate fabrication and installation issues associated with CVN 78 Class propulsion plant structures. In addition, develop close working relationships with all PPPY engineering and design disciplines as well as all upstream and downstream customers. Work with Design utilizing Team Center workflow process to communicate engineering resolution and approve changes to the product model. Tools utilized include Siemen's TEAMCENTER, FEAMAP, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, MATHCAD and a variety of other engineering and design software applications.
This position requires a BS in Engineering from an ABT accredited school of engineering with an emphasis on structural dynamics or equivalent. The candidate shall have excellent communication, writing skills, proficient in working in Team Center checking TAs and be able to work in team environment.
A BS in the following engineering disciplines - Civil/Structural, Mechanical, AeroSpace is preferred.
