Functions as a primary clinician with a specific caseload of patients in conjunction with the surgical/medical plan. Responsible for initiation, implementation and evaluation of nursing plan of care for a specific period of time with their primary focus on the first assisting role.

Primary Duties: 1. Involves the physician, patient/family and health care team in collaborative decision-making to modify the patient care plan. Serves the following age populations: infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. 2. Assesses patient status systematically to anticipate and respond to change in clinical condition. Includes age-related needs in responding to clinical changes. 3. Recognizes and initiates appropriate action in critical situations. 4. Participates in planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care based on defined patient care plan, patient care policies, standards of care and age-related needs. 5. Serves as a role model when demonstrating skill and competence in performing nursing procedures. 6. The first assistant shall assist the surgeon in the performance of a safe operation and shall function as a registered nurse first assistant only under the direct supervision of the surgeon. Performs first assisting duties including but not limited to: handling tissue, providing exposure, using instruments, suturing, and providing hemostasis. 7. Maintains effective interpersonal relationships with other departments, physicians, management and other staff members. 8. Assumes responsibility for maintaining and upgrading own professional development. 9. Conducts concurrent monitoring of Surgical Nurse, Certified Surgical Technologist and First Assistant roles. 10. Contributes to the development of unit policies, procedure and standards of care and age-related competencies. 11. Performs other duties as directed.

  1. Requires current licensure in the State of Ohio to practice professional nursing. Bachelor's Degree preferred. Must be CPR certified. Minimum of two (2) years of intraoperative clinical experience required. 2. Current specialty certification required (CNOR) issued by the Certification Board Perioperative Nursing (CBPN). Must have successfully completed a course in preparing the registered nurse as a first assistant in surgery. 3. Must be able to differentiate colors. 4. Must be able to tolerate frequent exposures to latex and latex products. 5. Must be able to tolerate exposures to blood-borne pathogens. 6. Must be able to move about hospital and between workstations; and prolonged periods of standing. 7. Must be able to understand directions, communicate and respond to inquiries; requires effective interpersonal skills. 8. Must be able to operate machinery. 9. Must be able to frequently move, lift and/or carry medium-heavy weight objects and materials. 10. Must be able to input and retrieve information from computer.
