Telecom Analyst
Purpose
The Telecommunications Analyst is responsible for system level support of Southern Company telecommunications transport systems and infrastructure. This includes support of the Company's RF systems to include AMI, MW, as well as GPON, DWDM, SEL ICON, and Nokia SARS Next Gen Telecom systems from both a 24x7 operations and project implementation perspective. This position is expected to manage maintenance, projects, assignments, and requests with minimal oversight and to effectively interface with multiple cross-functional parties on a frequent basis. i.e.: Infrastructure Operations Center, Power Delivery, Telecommunication Engineering, Field Ops, Telecom Requests, as well as, external parties (vendors and partners).
Job Responsibilities
Responsible for strategic and tactical plans and engineering designs for all telecom network facilities including digital microwave- packet, fiber optics, WAN and data communications equipment, ancillary systems, and leased telecommunications services.
Responsible for assisting in the management and prioritization of an annual functional budget and capital budget for transport network improvements in concert with related network planning, business case development, and engineering design.
Responsible for development and compliance of engineering standards including documentation, product, lifecycle plans, and design packages.
Responsible for coordinating supplemental engineering service providers and/or contractors performing transport/telecommunications engineering design.
Responsible for providing support to other Southern Company Operating Companies and/or Partners on issues related to transport network planning, engineering design, and engineering consulting.
Responsible for developing and participation in the successful completion of specified fiber projects within Southern Company territory to include Fiber to Distribution network, long haul fiber, and GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks) technology.
Responsible for providing third-level maintenance (reactive, preventative, and quality assurance) support as well as backup maintenance /installation coverage related to the identified networks / equipment at specific Southern Company locations.
Responsible for recommending and coordinating monitoring systems for any new telecommunications systems to include models for monitoring systems.

Technical / Leadership skills:

In-depth knowledge of two or more of the following telecommunications transport technologies: AMI, MW, LTE backhaul, fiber optics OSP, Nokia SARs or other similar DATA Networking routers, CPE.
Solid technical understanding of AMI network, RF, Microwave, fiber optics, data networks, voice networks, SCADA, and other major applications that use Southern Company transport network
Ability to analyze information from multiple sources for complex problem resolution
Ability to lead a team, coordinating various workgroups to drive complex problem resolution in a timely and efficient manner.
Ability to design / engineer network modifications / additions from a field perspective
Ability to organize tasks and coordinate various employees, vendor / contractors, and customers / partners to meet project goals
Ability to work independently, prioritizing major tasks by overall impact to the company
Ability to arrive at cost effective solutions in support of outages and projects
Ability to communicate and work with all levels of management, vendors, and other internal and external groups and customers
Ability to effectively lead meetings, train personnel, and make presentations
Ability to effectively utilize standard Company computing applications (i.e. Visio, Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
Ability to appropriately utilize documentation tools as required by specific job (CAD, TBMS, Visio, etc.)

The Telecom Analyst job requires the ability to drive long distances, travel overnight, be subject to 24x7 call out, work shifts greater than 8 hrs, lift / carry items up to approx. 50 lbs, climb stairs / ladders, and work in areas requiring specific safety measures such as radio transmission sites, fiber optic transmission sites, power plants, substations, transmission right - of- ways, as well as various remote locations.
Competencies

General knowledge of information technologies (those currently used within the system and new technologies)
General knowledge of IT infrastructure components
General knowledge of processes for obtaining FCC licenses for microwave paths to include the FCC ULS system.
General knowledge of Power Delivery SCADA systems and AMI network.
Understand engineering/analysis/design discipline and methodology
Ability to effectively organize tasks, manage multiple priorities/details, meet schedules, and deliver on customer commitments

Education / Experience
- Two-year degree in electronics technology or equivalent experience in the telecommunications field is required.
