What We're Looking For
HNTB is currently seeking to hire a traffic engineer in their Orange County office (preferred location). An applicant who can work in the HNTB Los Angeles or Ontario office would also be considered. The target applicant will have five to ten years of experience in traffic engineering and operations modeling, but slightly more or less experience is acceptable. The candidate will support our Southern California traffic staff in a variety of traffic operational analysis and traffic design tasks. Project work will include modeling, data analysis, design, estimating, specifications, and report writing on freeway corridor, arterial, and transit projects at various stages of development (ranging from the planning phase through construction). Typical deliverable work includes feasibility studies, technical studies in support of environmental documents, and transportation management plans (TMPs). In addition, the candidate will also assist with traffic design work for plans, specification, and estimate (PS&E) packages such as signing/striping, traffic signal, stage construction, and traffic handling plans. Communications skills (verbal and written) and ability to work with remote teams are very important. Someone who is familiar with the Caltrans project development process, standard plans, standard specifications, directives, and policies and has Southern California experience on planning and design projects (as opposed to research) is particularly desirable.
Essential Responsibilities:
Responsible for completion of discipline engineering project elements such as reports, designs, specifications and plans.
Responsible for coordination and productivity of subordinates. Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
Works closely with other disciplines and multi-discipline projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Primary Focus Will Include:
Develops traffic analysis models, supplemental analysis complex spreadsheets, and result summaries appropriate to specific project needs, including: VISSIM, Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, FREEVAL, and Rodel experience are preferred; other software packages are helpful.
Prepares TMPs, including traffic analysis for TMPs projecting and analyzing diversions and summarizing benefits and costs
Communicates results in presentations and in writing
Utilizes travel demand modeling tools to aid in development of future traffic volume projections
Independently identifies and analyzes transportation planning issues, including: Determining datasets required to bring forth the best answer; Analyzing and presenting the study result; Providing interpretation on feasibility of implementation or concerns around the result
Writes technical reports and creates presentations of findings (samples may be required) that have been presented to a diverse group of clients and the public
Provides quality control of traffic analyses, including traffic data, forecasts, simulation and operations analysis
Prepares signing, striping, stage construction, and traffic handling plans, estimates, and specifications
Application of California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD) and Caltrans standards/policies to develop construction sequencing of roadway improvements on freeway, ramps, and local streets while using traffic operations background to make informed decisions on temporary roadway configurations and vehicular detours
Constant coordination with other project disciplines to identify planning and design conflicts
Willing to learn ITS and emerging technology planning/design skills
Builds effective client relationships
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering
5 years relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
California PE and/or TE
EIT
Able to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
