About VMware:
VMware is the leader in cloud infrastructure, business mobility and virtualization software. A pioneer in the use of virtualization and policy-driven automation technologies, VMware simplifies IT complexity across the entire data center to the virtual workplace, empowering customers with solutions in the software-defined data center to hybrid cloud computing and the mobile workspace.
The Opportunity
Our group, Innovation and Incubation Partnerships , is part of the Office of the CTO. We foster innovation and develop new products and services. We work closely with universities, government research labs, VMware's internal research team, product teams and sometimes directly with VMware customers. The project in question is focused on Confidential Computing and security.
Confidential Computing employs new security mechanisms for protecting program confidentiality and integrity, wherever they run, even from malicious insiders at remote datacenters. It relies on a principled trust mechanism rooted in cryptographic proofs managed by the underlying hardware platform. It is a foundational technology that can protect very sensitive applications and data.
We are developing prototype infrastructure components, libraries, SDKs and sample applications that enable developers to use Confidential Computing securely with a minimum of effort and, in turn, allow customers deploy, manage and audit these applications in a simple but flexible and comprehensive manner.
The heart and soul of this technology requires that we develop applications that are important to customers as well as -harden- VMware products and services. We have important engagements with government, financial institutions, healthcare providers, cloud service providers and security providers.
You will help identify and develop critical applications to showcase technology and demonstrate it in critical customer applications. You will design and develop programs as well as consult with others as they adopt this technology. You may participate in customer meetings to understand use cases and requirements. You will also help improve the API, management tools, adding new functions as you discover new uses and identify gaps that slow adoption. You may also participate in research activities within VMware or in universities to assimilate emerging technologies.
For this position, we are seeking creative software engineers with a passion for security. A background in Confidential Computing, system security, and Trusted Execution Environments (e.g., Attestation, security protocols, Intel SGX, AMD SEV, Intel TDX, Asylo, Open Enclaves) is valuable. Some background in kernel- and/or driver-level development and knowledge of virtualization is a plus. A broad exposure and working knowledge of security and cryptographic protocols is important.
Since you'll be developing software, you should have programming skills in C and C++ and be able to develop and debug programs as you learn and use state-of-the-art tools. The team is small, nimble, informal, productive, and interactive and the environment is similar to that in a strong university research team or focused start-up. You'll also find the opportunity to learn (and help develop) new technology or use new tools like Rust, Go, Machine learning frameworks and cryptographic techniques. There is a decided emphasis on -pushing the envelope- with a keen eye on real product insertion.
Education and experience
A bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or EE, ECS, etc.) and comparable work experience is required and many people who have graduate degrees or research will benefit from all those skills.
Hiring Manager and location
The work location is flexible. We expect interest from Government customers so Washington, DC is a possibility. So is Palo Alto or Boston, MA. The hiring manager is John Manferdelli (?). As with all our team members, managers are deeply involved in technology.
