Job Description

This position is a waterfront engineering (field engineering) position where candidates will be supporting the new construction of Columbia Class Submarines in our Joint Manufacturing Assembly Facility, Ship Join Bay, as well as many other shops and facilities as needed. This is a hands-on position where candidates will spend at least 25% of working hours on the ship or interacting with mechanics/trades personnel to resolve manufacturing issues during the submarine construction process. Candidates should expect to be working in a construction environment on a daily basis. Candidates will be expected to review product drawings, ship-check as-built conditions of the product, interact with construction trades and then formulate technically sound engineering resolutions. Candidates should possess the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to mechanics/trades and other engineers and possess a strong ability to mentor new engineers.

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

Basic Qualifications

5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
