Description

Job Summary:

Atlanta Gas Light is looking for Engineers interested in joining this country's vital natural gas industry. Natural Gas is an essential part of America's Energy mix and a trusted energy source for more than 70 million homes and businesses. With over a 100-year supply of natural gas reserves in North America, the natural gas industry has a bright future.

This position is an exciting opportunity for engineers who enjoy the challenges and responsibilities of overseeing and supporting the construction of natural gas transmission and distribution facilities. The right candidate must be a self-starter and able to make sound decisions. Incumbents in this role provide project-level technical support and administer external resources who construct gas utility infrastructure, while delivering on financial and operating objectives. The Project Engineer promotes quality and safety expectations and ensures that those standards are met within a functional area.

Functional Expertise:

  • Support the development of technical procedures, projects, and engineering designs related to natural gas pipelines, regulator stations and associated appurtenances by interacting with staff and performing quality reviews to ensure designs meet PHMSA, State, and Company standards

  • Makes decisions in the field and coordinates with internal and/or external service providers and support departments (Engineering, System Operations, System Planning, Integrity Management and Material Standards) to ensure that work is performed as planned and in accordance with applicable codes and standards

  • Inspects Construction (safety, compliance, quality, locates and restoration)

  • Reviews and approves reports, field changes, and as-built records to ensure compliance and company standards and policies

  • Updates as necessary, Management, Engineering and other applicable stakeholders on project progress

Business Acumen:

  • Develop permanent records and evaluation processes to an established standard

  • Support the design of engineering solutions that provide the most efficient and cost-effective long-term solutions for ongoing issues with the Company's natural gas system

  • Ensure that applicable requirements and standards for reporting are followed

  • Assure compliance with Company policies & procedures

  • Identify and properly manage project risk

Engagement:

  • Collaborate with Construction Operations, Engineering, GIS and Asset Data Services, System Integrity and System Planning leaders to produce effective solutions and designs

  • Attend regular department and project meetings

  • Influences external contractors who represent the company by shadowing corporate values.

  • Track project metrics to identify project risks

Driving Results:

  • Establishes and monitors work goals and objectives. Measures performance and sets safety, quality and productivity metrics.

  • Creates and/or implements improved processes and techniques to enhance operating environments.

Project Engineer I

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • BS in Engineering or Engineering Technology (Mechanical, Civil or similar)

  • 0-2 years of progressive Engineering experience

Or

  • Equivalent academic education and experience

Skills:

  • Technical writing, analysis, problem solving

  • Basic ability to communicate with all levels in the organization

  • Resolve construction-related technical issues

  • Computer Assisted Design/Geographic Information System - basic proficiency

  • MS Office - advanced proficiency

Certifications/Licenses:

Preferred:

  • Engineer in Training (EIT)

Project Engineer II

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • BA/BS in Engineering or Engineering Technology (Mechanical, Civil or similar)

  • 2-4 years of progressive Engineering experience

Or

  • Equivalent academic education and experience

Skills:

  • Technical writing, analysis, problem solving

  • Basic project management

  • Intermediate ability to communicate with all levels in the organization

  • Basic ability to influence and persuade in decision making

  • Resolve construction-related technical issues

  • Develop system isolation, purge, and pressurization routines

  • Review hydrostatic test procedures

  • Computer Assisted Design/Geographic Information System - intermediate proficiency

  • MS Office - advanced proficiency

Certifications/Licenses:

Preferred:

  • Engineer in Training (EIT)

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

Project Engineer III

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • BA/BS in Engineering or Engineering Technology (Mechanical, Civil or similar)

  • 4 years of progressive engineering experience in gas standards and materials, project engineering or construction management of natural gas or other pipeline facilities

  • Demonstrated success in multiple utility-related departments (i.e. Design Engineering, Construction Operations, Cathodic Protection, Standards Development, PMO, System Planning, Field Ops, Integrity Management, etc.)

  • 2 years familiarity and experience with Gas Safety regulations or utility pipeline construction practices

Preferred:

  • Master of Business Administration or MS in Engineering

Skills:

  • Technical writing, analysis, problem solving

  • Intermediate to advanced project management

  • Process improvement

  • Document management

  • Material failure investigations

  • Construction-related technical issue resolution

  • Significant ability to communicate with all levels in the organization

  • Development of system isolation, purge, and pressurization routines

  • Approval of hydrostatic test procedures

  • Intermediate to advanced ability to influence and persuade in decision making

  • Computer Assisted Design or Geographic Information System - intermediate proficiency

  • MS Office - advanced proficiency

Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • Engineer in Training (EIT)

Preferred:

  • Professional Engineer (PE), Project Management Professional (PMP), or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)

    Working Conditions/Physical Requirements :

  • The incumbent will be exposed to varying outdoor weather conditions.

  • The incumbent will be exposed to construction related activities including walking of construction sites

  • This position occasionally requires prolonged standing or walking.

  • This position occasionally requires the incumbent to reach above shoulder-level.

  • This position occasionally requires the incumbent to climb in/out of excavations, kneel, bend, and climb ladders to inspect pipeline construction activity.

  • This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

  • Local travel with occasional overnight travel

  • Keyboarding

  • The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or chemicals and provided proper PPE.

  • The incumbent may be exposed to excessive noise and provided proper PPE.

  • This position requires the use of a Company vehicle.
