Primary Objective:
The User Experience (UX) Intern will support design and development of the next generation software used to set up and control MTS test and simulation products. The UX Intern will be part of the team employing usability methods such as heuristic evaluation, needs finding, usability testing and rapid prototyping to design and evaluate next generation and new products.
Major Areas of Accountability:
The UX Intern will lead a pilot program to develop metrics for assessing usability of MTS's platform application software. As a basis of this pilot program, the Intern will investigate which types of usability metrics and heuristics would be most feasible to employ for assessing user interface design for this specific product family. Then build a plan that includes a roadmap, timeline, and steps to be completed to generate metrics based on the findings of this investigation. Critical elements of this plan include:
A review of industry best practices in usability metrics
Recommendations of which metrics best fit the MTS platform software application product line
Recommendations of how those metrics should be measured
Building consensus among stakeholders around an optimal set of metrics and how those metrics will be measured
Baselining the usability metrics of the current state of the software
Review of prioritized assessment of areas needing improvement
Proposal for how to improve the software development process to drive continuous improvement of usability as measured by improvement in those metrics
Working with MTS UX experts and software development staff, the UX Intern will develop an analytical foundation to guide the design of the MTS software user experience for years to come. The UX Intern will be responsible for producing user flows, use cases, software screen designs, reports, bug descriptions and work instructions for screen designs. In addition, they will be involved in, and sometimes lead, user interviews, brain-storming sessions, heuristic walkthroughs and usability tests, responsible for developing reports from those activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
Pursuit or attainment of a BA or MA/MS in Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, UX Design, User Experience, Engineering or a related field.
Experience conducting user interviews, needs finding and user requirements gathering
Familiarity with heuristic evaluation techniques and usability testing
Familiarity with experimental research of software products
Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Rapid Prototyping experience is a plus
