Southern Company Services (SCS) - Resource Planning Department

This position will be located at APC Headquarters in Birmingham, AL

WORK LOCATION

This position will be based out of Birmingham, AL, however, candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and would be willing to travel to the office on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.

JOB SUMMARY

SCS Resource Planning supports the retail operating companies of Southern Company (Alabama Power Company, Georgia Power Company, and Mississippi Power Company) through modeling, analysis, and economic evaluations which inform supply-side and demand-side resource decisions that build the future of energy in a clean, safe, reliable and affordable manner for our customers. Resource Planning supports both the regulatory activities of the retail operating companies and the strategic planning activities of Southern Company. Resource Planning consists of the following four functions: Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), Energy Budget, Forecasting and Model Development, and Reliability and RFPs.

The engineer/analyst role in the IRP group will support development of the Southern Electric System Generation Expansion Plan and for supporting the retail operating companies in 1) the annual development of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), 2) preparing major portions of the operating company IRP and generation certification regulatory filings and supporting needs related to the IRP and certification regulatory and business processes, 3) determining Intercompany Interchange Contract (IIC) Capacity Recognition as well as other IIC Reserve Sharing support, 4) development of the retail capacity price forecast used by generation, OpCo marketing and customer choice, and 5) various other generation economic analysis and planning work related to Southern Company's generation resources.

This position works closely with various organizations and all levels of the SCS and Retail Operating Company operating and planning organizations, so the successful candidate must be able to effectively communicate complex concepts clearly and concisely with diverse audiences.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (specific to each position)

Responsibilities for each position include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Development of the System and individual Retail Operating Company capacity expansion plans, using Aurora, that are used to evaluate major future supply-side and demand side decisions.

  • Support operating company IRPs, rate cases, capacity certifications, and other filing requests

  • Support strategic planning activities and conduct internal analyses for key state or federal initiatives impacting the planning process. (e.g., GHG reduction initiatives)

  • Development of IIC capacity recognition data to support IIC financial settlement for the operating companies.

  • Development of the retail capacity price forecast used throughout the company to value capacity when making major supply side and demand side decisions.

  • Create, maintain, integrate, and optimize analytical tools related to data management and reporting.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Finance, Economics, or an equivalent analytical field is required

  • Experience or understanding of power system (or related) modeling and optimization efforts. Prior experience with Aurora (electric system modeling software from Energy Exemplar) is a plus

  • Understanding of production cost principles

  • Proven analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex topics verbally and in written form

  • Knowledge of integrated resource planning, power plant operations, power pool operations, utility finance (including revenue requirements and cash flow analysis), generation economic evaluation, engineering economics and related computer modeling desired

  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations and legislation is beneficial

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position can require some travel - typically

  • Travel includes both day-trip and overnight travel, primarily within the Southern Company retail footprint, but may include anywhere in the intercontinental US.
