Southern Nuclear Operating Company, headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama: two operating reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, GA; two operating reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two operating reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL. In addition, construction activities are well underway for two new AP1000 Units (V3&4) at our Plant Vogtle location in Waynesboro, GA .

Job Summary

Components Engineers serve as the owners of assigned component(s), acting as the station's focal point to increase component reliability and performance, reduce operating and maintenance costs, and maintain compliance with the plant design basis and regulatory requirements. The specific assignments are in the areas of

  • Valves (Motor-operated, check, and relief)

  • Snubbers

  • Motors/Motor Testing

  • Electrical Components (including protective relays, switches [hand, level, flow, pressure], distribution transformers, battery chargers, inverters, UPS, and emergency lights)

  • Oil Analysis/Tribology

Engineers at Southern Nuclear may have opportunities to manage special projects. Also, engineers typically take key refueling outage assignments. Engineering assignments typically include on-call duty engineer and emergency plan response requirements.

Educational Requirements

  • BS in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution required

  • Electrical Engineer or Mechanical Engineer preferred

Background/Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum eight (8) years of engineering related experience preferred

  • Minimum five (5) years of nuclear plant experience preferred

Knowledge and Behavioral Attributes

  • Background in engineering with a working knowledge of applicable discipline (valves, snubbers, motors/motor testing, electrical components, and/or oil analysis/tribology), including discipline-specific codes and standards is strongly preferred.

  • Ability to solve problems and make sound engineering decisions, based on experience and appropriate industry practices, in order to make timely decisions that might impact plant safety and reliability.

  • Ensures quality decisions are made by considering financial implications of decisions and actions to ensure costs are controlled.

  • Holds self and others accountable for superior results: component assignments offer a significant opportunity for learning and mentoring. Assigned Components Engineers should model high nuclear standards and technical conscience

  • Capable of working efficiently, effectively, and respectfully across organizations: Components engineers will coordinate with peers across departments to resolve complex issues. It is expected that they will be respectful and professional in every interaction.

  • Working knowledge in nuclear plant systems, structures, and components preferred.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Assumes personal responsibility for individual and team success.

  • Proven organizational skills with ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Capable of working efficiently and effectively across organizations.

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft office products, specifically WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT.

    Other Requirements:

  • Ability to gain unescorted access to Southern Nuclear's Vogtle Electric Generating Plant is required.

  • This position requires the successful completion of the SNC Initial Engineering Training as a condition of continued employment. The training is approximately 6 weeks long and is a rigorous period that may require studying after work hours.
