Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a full-time Architectural Historian with one to eight-years' experience to assist our Cultural Resources team. The position will entail technical work focusing on historic structures documentation and evaluation, with an emphasis on telecommunications projects, Section 106 compliance, and architectural survey work. Sponsorship not available for this position. As a condition of employment, hire will be required to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. Proof of vaccination will need to be submitted as part of the interview/hiring process.

The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team including archaeologists, architectural historians, historians, environmental scientists, engineers, and planners. The qualified candidate must be able to write at a professional level and present ideas in a well thought-out and comprehensive manner. The preferred candidate will enjoy a variety of working conditions ranging from field efforts to office analysis. Responsibilities will include:

  • Fieldwork to survey a variety of structure types;

  • In-person and online archival research;

  • Documenting and evaluating historic structures;

  • Writing property descriptions, historical narratives, significance statements, and National Register justifications

  • Section 106 effect evaluations

  • Assist with HABS/HAER/HALS and other forms of mitigation

Required Skills

The qualified applicant must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Qualification Standards 36 CFR 61 as an Architectural Historian or Historian. Qualified applicants must have experience conducting background research and writing reports at a professional level. Experience with organizing and completing fieldwork is preferred. Knowledge and understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and Section 106 regulations is required.

Required Experience

  • A Master's Degree from an accredited school in Historic Preservation (or similar field).

  • Meets, or exceeds, the requirements for an Architectural Historian and/or Historian under the Secretary of the Interior's Standards.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be capable of renting a car.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with GIS and Adobe Acrobat Professional

  • Experience with digital photography (including SLR cameras)

  • FHWA or ACHP Certified Section 106 Course

  • Experience with FCC 620/621 forms

Working Conditions

The preferred candidate should enjoy working in the outdoors as required to complete job tasks. The job will require, but may not be limited to, certain physical demands while performing duties in the field. These physical requirements will include the ability to walk, stand, kneel, or bend for extended periods of time and be able to carry field equipment and supplies long distances. Field work may be conducted during any time of the year and may occur in a variety of weather and climate conditions, as needed. The candidate is not required to perform field work in hazardous weather conditions.

The position will entail up to 50 percent travel throughout the United States (primarily east coast, mid-west, and mid-Atlantic). Candidate must be willing to travel throughout the U.S. for brief (e.g., 1 or 2 week) work efforts on their own as well as with coworkers.
