Job Summary

The Eastern Regional Operations Center (ROC) is seeking an Engineer I for our Norfolk VA office. The successful candidate will perform the following

  • Provide engineering support for all Distributed Energy Resources (DER) activities, including the following:

  • Commercial Solar

  • Net Metering

  • Battery Storage

  • Legacy Synchronization sites

  • New and future DER technologies as introduced

  • Will provide engineering support for complex Substation and Distribution switching, including the following:

  • Planned and emergency load moves

  • Installation of mobile substation transformers

  • Conduct annual review of load shed programs

  • Review and define Post Contingency Local Load Relief Warnings (PCLLRW) increments as required for transmission-related abnormal conditions

  • Support new and changing operating technologies as they develop, to include:

  • ADMS

  • FLISR

  • Work alternate hours when required to support the operational needs of the three Regional Operating Centers

  • Must become fully qualified to perform ROC switching in twelve (12) months (training provided)

  • Support restoration switching during significant events

  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences required for entry into this job include the following:

0-2+ years of engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)

  • Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory

  • Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)

  • Effective decision making skills

  • Computer skills and application of software programs

  • Analytical and abstract thinking skills

  • Problem solving skills

  • Ability to learn to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems

  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices

  • Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills

  • Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks

  • Ability to work within a team environment.

  • Customer Service experience is preferred

Education Requirements

Engineering Degree is Required (see below for engineering criteria)

Electrical Engineering Degree is preferred

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, OR

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, OR

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, OR

  • Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, OR

  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
