Job Summary

Electrical Equipment Technician T1 (Developmental Level-entry level in a job series)

*This is an entry level position and the objectives and courses as listed below in the qualifications description section must be completed to meet the requirements of this position.(Please see course descriptions below in qualifications description section)

  • Performs assignments designed to develop work knowledge, skills and abilities requiring application of policies, procedures, techniques and other criteria in carrying out all aspects of the job

  • Performs routine work assignments but over time will demonstrate the ability to perform more difficult work assignments

  • Works under established policies and procedures to meet set schedules and system or program requirements; Continues to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to reach a higher level of proficiency and work complexity

Electrical Equipment Technician T2

*Note: To progress to the Electrical Equipment Technician T2 level, incumbents must have completed Steps 1 and 2 in the Electrical Equipment Technician Development Program. (Please see course descriptions below in qualifications description section)

  • Provides technical assistance to substation and power station personnel in the installation, maintenance and repair of high-voltage electrical equipment including procurement of materials, spare parts and specific tools

  • Interprets nameplate data, substation one-line diagrams, factory test reports, electrical schematics, pneumatic schematics, hydraulic schematics and programmable logic controller (PLC) set-up configurations

  • Performs diagnostic testing such as dissolved gas analysis (DGA), high voltage power factor measurement, velocity and motion analysis on high voltage interrupting apparatus and aerial lift DC certification

  • Performs infrared thermography requiring Level I certification

  • Assists in the safe operation of mobile oil processing equipment for filling HV and EHV power transformers

  • Provides limited guidance for maintaining / troubleshooting misc. substation support equipment such as dry air production units, SF6 gas reclamation systems, confined space instrumentation, portable combustible gas monitors and two-stage vacuum pumps

  • Maintains substation related equipment records, reviews inspection reports, issues maintenance work orders and provides accurate field data for entry into SAP for PJM and NERC PRC-005 compliance

  • Performs routine and commissioning testing of insulating media for high voltage electrical equipment used in substations and power stations

  • Assists in the resolution of equipment issues discovered during commissioning and routine maintenance

  • Participates in substation ground grid testing and data analysis; Performs battery discharge and impedance testing to ensure a reliable DC system

  • Applies control point data to digital load tap changer and feeder regulator control panels to ensure proper voltage regulation

  • Under peer review, programs PLC's and interprets logic diagrams, and interprets control and relay functional diagrams; Tests, cleans, inspects, replaces and adjusts digital and electro-mechanical relays and controls for complex power equipment used within substation operations (with the exception of system protection relays);develops transformer fill procedures and documents actual fill process guidelines to ensure manufacturer specified compliance.

Electrical Equipment Technician T1: 0 - 1 years of directly related experience; *This is an entry level position and the following objectives and courses must be completed to meet the requirements of this position. (Please see course description in Electrical Equipment Development Program below in Qualifications Description)

Developmental Level-entry level in a job series.

  • Prefer knowledge of manufacturer and company equipment installation, maintenance guidelines and electrical test equipment

  • Familiar with programmable logic controllers (PLC's) and electrical control wiring

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Abilities: Demonstrate basic knowledge of electrical circuits and components; ability to work under pressure; ability to carry heavy test equipment (with assistance as needed)

  • Due to equipment weight limits, individuals in this role have a weight restriction of 290 pounds

  • Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined (above)

Electrical Equipment Technician T2: Minimum of 1 year directly related experience; Successful completion of Electrical Equipment Technician Development Program, Steps 1 & 2; (Please see course description in Electrical Equipment Development Program below in Qualifications Description) *Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications

  • Knowledge of manufacturer and company equipment installation, maintenance guidelines and electrical test equipment

  • Knowledge of programmable logic controllers and electrical control wiring

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Abilities: Under peer review, able to test and troubleshoot high voltage substation and power station electrical equipment; use high voltage test equipment; work under pressure situations; carry heavy test equipment

  • Due to equipment weight limits, individuals in this role have a weight restriction of 290 pounds

  • Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined (above)
