T&PS Technical Services, I&C Data Acquisition & Real-Time Systems (RTS) Department

WORK LOCATION & TRAVEL

  • This position will be based out of Birmingham, AL or Atlanta, GA, however candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.

  • Relocation is not offered for this position.

  • Travel expectations - approximately 30% per year, to include both office and field locations as dictated by business need.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for performing Data Acquisition and Real-Time Systems activities at generating plants for Southern Company Generation. The primary focus is system detailed design, configuration, communications, commissioning, and support of revenue watt-hour meters, Automatic Generation Control (AGC) Remote Terminal Unit (RTU), and Real-Time Automation Controllers (RTAC).

This position reports to the Plant Field Services Supervisor within the Technical & Project Solutions (T&PS), Technical Services I&C Systems & Field Services Organization.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead or assist in the preparing and overseeing of Data Acquisition and RTS activities including document production and interpretation, instrumentation selection, metering configuration, checkout, and startup.

  • Complete detailed design, configuration, communications, commissioning, and support of AGC RTU/RTACs and revenue watt-hour meters.

  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, network diagrams and three-line drawings.

  • Make recommendations or develop project scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Participate on a 24/7 on- call rotation assisting plants on Data Acquisition or RTS issues.

  • Assist generating facilities with SOX controls including documentation for compliance purposes.

  • Ability to work proficiently both as part of a team and independently.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience:

  • Associate's degree from an accredited institution in Electronic Engineering Technology, Industrial Controls or equivalent degree/experience is a plus.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in relevant engineering field is a plus.

  • Technical Certifications and/or work experience in data acquisition, real time systems practices, networking principles, or power plant operations may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in any/all of the following areas is required:

  • Power plant operations

  • Metering

  • RTU/RTAC

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to create and maintain positive working relationships is required.

  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships across department and organization lines is required.

  • Proficient understanding in the use and development of design documents including single lines, elementary diagrams, control wiring diagrams, instrument data sheets, instrument installation details, functional logic drawings, specifications, project scopes, estimates, and schedules is required.

  • Plant process knowledge is highly preferred.

  • Experience in the commissioning of Generation or Power Delivery micro-processor assets is highly preferred.

  • Understanding of Industrial Control System (ICS) communications and SCADA principles is preferred.

  • Familiarity with basic network topology and communication protocols (such as Modbus, DNP3, ICCP and SES92) is preferred.

  • Experience with Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) controls preferred.

  • Possessing a high level of initiative and being able to effectively plan, organize, and execute work.

  • Assuming personal responsibility for the success of the group and department.
