JOB SUMMARY

The Georgia Power Environmental Laboratory provides analytical services for facilities owned or operated by Southern Company and its subsidiaries. This position will perform chemistry analyses related to REMP, NPDES, remediation, closed cooling water, and groundwater monitoring for customers including Generation, Southern Nuclear, and Southern Company Services (SCS). This position may also provide analytical support in radiochemistry, fuel, and/or dosimetry. These analyses are provided to help the company meet or exceed environmental compliance with state and federal regulations. The GPEL has accredited programs through the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) and the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP).

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • BS degree in science field (Chemistry degree preferred).

  • Experience / Knowledge & Skills

  • Environmental laboratory experience with a variety of general chemistry instrumentation including ion selective electrode, IC, mercury analyzer, XRF, Calorimeter and/or GC.

  • Experience in a National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) environment preferred

  • Preferred experience with ICP and/or ICP-MS analysis and maintenance. In depth knowledge of metals analysis in a variety of matrices a plus.

  • In-depth knowledge of Fules analysis and Coal and Fuel Oil is a plus.

  • Handling, preparing, and analyzing environmental samples according to EPA, ASTM, or other protocols.

  • Experience with quality control requirements for analytical methods

  • Experience in chemical nomenclature, instrumentation, and inorganic analytical methods including EPA methodology supporting NPDES, RCRA, CERCLA, TSCA, and EPA SolidWaste - 846 methods (Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste, Physical/Chemical Methods).

  • Must have excellent Communication and Interpersonal Skills.

  • Ability to interface with a variety of internal/external work groups and plant personnel.

  • Must be able to drive new initiatives and processes related to area of responsibility.

  • Must have computer proficiency utilizing instrument and data management software as well as the ability to write internal procedures using regulatory analytical methods.

  • Use of technical procedures to perform analyses, troubleshoot, and solve technical issues.

  • Understanding of OSHA laboratory safety requirement sunder 40 CFR 1910.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work safely, identify and implement corrective actions for unsafe working conditions.

  • Partner with customers to provide cost effective analytical services for compliance reporting.

  • Prepare and analyze inorganic and organic samples using a variety of laboratory instrumentation and analytical methodology. (EPA and ASTM)

  • Ensure analytical methods comply with accreditation, permits and regulatory requirements.

  • Interpret results according to operating procedures and applicable standards (EPA and ASTM methodology).

  • Serve as technical expert and project manager for analytical services, which involves working with internal

  • customers, accreditation agencies and regulatory groups to provide cost-effective compliance solutions.

  • Develop and maintain analytical methods and internal procedures to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements and enhance the lab's quality system.

  • Manage logistics and customer interface for samples to meet quality requirements and customer needs.
