This internship can be offered 100% in person or a hybrid of both in person and virtual for candidates living near the Serco office in Herndon, VA. Serco follows all CDC state and local COVID-19 recommendations and ensures the safety of all on-site employees.

Serco's Training and Experience Program (STEP) is designed to provide undergraduate university and college students paid accredited internship opportunities to gain meaningful, hands-on work experience in a professional environment. STEP emphasizes developing the workforce of the future. Our goal is to help you build a career roadmap that provides you with challenging and rewarding learning experiences with Serco.

Serco offers internship opportunities across the following three career tracks: Business, Technical, and Engineering. Our 2022 internship opportunities are available throughout the U.S. and Canada and begin on May 23 rd and conclude on August 12 th , with 1 week off July 4 th - 8 th . You will work with your manager to identify the best working schedule for you - working no more than an average of 36 hours a week with the added perk of half-days on Fridays.

In addition to gaining hands-on experience, you will attend training sessions taught by skilled leaders in our company which provides training to better prepare you for a full-time career. These training sessions range from finance, personality in the workplace, presentation skills, resume building, and more. In addition, we believe great ideas come from all levels of the company! Because of that, each year we challenge our interns to work in diverse teams to develop, propose and execute on a project that improves our ways of working. Throughout this project you will work with Senior Sponsors and meet with members of our Executive Team.

Position Description

The Legal Department is seeking a bright innovative Legal Intern to join their efforts in supporting business growth while managing risk and ensuring compliance. Through this role you will gain exposure to Serco's Senior Vice President (SVP) and General Counsel and his attorney team, paralegal team members, the Ethics department, as well as our Compliance, Security, and Export Control teams.

As the Legal Intern you will gain exposure to a wide range of projects and responsibilities within the Legal Department. In this role you will gain the opportunity to assist with internal defense preparations for at least one litigation matter. This will be a fantastic experience in getting exposure to an actual legal case. You also be tasked with supporting a key Legal project in translating lessons learned from key legal cases into training and support of managers in the hopes to prevent future risks or cases. As the Legal Intern, you will also gain the opportunity to get exposure to legal compliance and internal employee speak-up complaint support. Lastly, you will gain exposure to policies and procedures and be assigned a role in refreshing corporate policy to include briefing to our SVP and General Counsel.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain inside access to the in-house Legal Department of a billion-dollar government contracting company. Participating in this in-house practice will give you access to a larger portfolio of legal matters than a law firm summer internship would.

During your time at Serco, you will get the opportunity to peek behind the curtain to see and understand what it's like to support business clients in multiple domains. You will have a chance to learn how to gather and digest data and information, practice writing skills, and interact with actual business clients to understand the relationship side of a legal practice.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in internal investigations and report preparation

  • Support evidence gathering and conduct internal discovery to defend actual lawsuits and potential suits

  • Participate in internal compliance reviews with executives and subject matter experts

  • Develop new internal policies and procedures to address changing laws and regulations

  • Support design of new training topics and risk reduction measures

  • Help create landing site for lessons learned from real cases and convert those lessons into guidance easily accessible by non-lawyers

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Ideal candidates are rising seniors who have a interest in a career in practicing law and want to expose themselves to a variety of different types.

  • Prior internship experience is a plus.

  • Involvement in extracurricular activities demonstrating initiative and leadership.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint is a plus.

  • Self-motivated with a strong work initiative and attention to detail.

  • Strong customer service, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated experience collaborating in a team environment.

  • Passion for learning with a wide degree of creativity and curiosity.
