Job Summary

Surry Power Station located in Surry; Virginia is looking for a Industrial Engineering intern to work in its Subsequent License Renewal (SLR) Engineering department the summer of 2022. The SLR Team is working on a large Project Portfolio to upgrade / retrofit the plant to extend the viable generation of carbon free electricity for an additional 20 years, from the current license end at year 60 to year 80. Job duties will concentrate in Project Management activities which include:

Developing project scopes of work, project charter/funding requests, project plans, periodic status reports, and risk registers.

  • Performing and/or reviewing engineering design changes, design and procurement specifications, engineering calculations and research.

  • Providing technical oversight of design modifications for assigned projects.

  • Providing cost analysis as needed and develops recommendations based on calculations (e.g. cost for equipment upgrade) for management review.

  • Managing scope, cost, schedule, and quality for project assignments and regularly communicates with station stakeholders and leadership for information and concurrence.

  • Under direction of supervisor or work leader, exercising independence in evaluating, selecting and applying standard or well-defined engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. May be required to apply intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to major projects.

  • Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing and presentations)

  • Effective decision-making skills

  • Computer skills and application of software programs

  • Analytical, abstract thinking, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to collaborate and achieve alignment with other groups, departments, or organizations

  • Ability to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems

  • Ability to plan, organize, and execute project activities

  • Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks

  • Ability to work independently and develop leadership skills in a team environment

  • Experience managing budgets and schedules is preferred

  • Knowledge of project management processes and best practices preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Must be able to follow instructions and work with others in a collaborative team environment setting

  • Must have strong verbal and written communications skills

  • Must be enrolled in an ABET accredited engineering program at a four-year college or university

  • Must have an anticipated graduation date between December 2023 and May 2025
