Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC), headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama: two reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, GA; two reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL. In addition, construction activities are underway for two new reactors at our Plant Vogtle location.
Summary of Position Duties
The Health Physicist/Radioactive Waste Shipper is responsible for:
Monitoring all aspects of the Health Physics program and performance indicators to include:
ALARA program
outage preparation and execution
radioactive waste management
shipping of radioactive waste/material
Process Control Program
Implementing special projects to improve health physics
Tracking/Trending all radiological data related to plant performance indicators
Benchmarking industry on health physics issues and site performance
Providing technical support for the Health Physics department, including assessments of internal dose/whole body counting, skin dose and shielding; compliance with all regulatory requirements
Substituting as Health Physics Manager as required - qualification as per ANSI 3.1 - 1993
Ensuring that ALARA committee meetings are held quarterly; preparing agenda and tracking actions
Maintaining the ALARA suggestion program
Serving as an on-call HP Supervisor
Filling the Emergency Response Organization positions of dose analyst or TSC HP Supervisor
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education Requirements
Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Physics, Health Physics, Chemistry or other physical science preferred. Nuclear Navy training certification or equivalent is also preferred.
Advanced degree or American Academy of Health Physics Certified Health Physicist certification is highly desirable
Background/Experience Requirements
Minimum of three (3) years experience in nuclear power Health Physics or Radiation Protection programs is required
ANSI certification as a Health Physics Technician is desirable
Experience with nuclear power plant outages, access control and ALARA is also desirable
Experience with radwaste management and shipping is a plus
Experience with project management including budgets and scheduling is desired
Applicant must be able to obtain an unescorted badge at all SNC sites
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and databases are highly desirable
Outstanding oral and written communication skills are required. Strong presentation skills are also required
Strong ability to make decisions and drive behaviors is required
Strong working knowledge of nuclear power plant systems, processes, and procedures and clear understanding of and ability to apply regulatory requirements to plant settings are desired
Strong interpersonal skills are required
Ability to balance multiple objectives and set priorities is required
Ability to problem solve and seek alternative solutions to complex issues is needed
