Purpose of Job

We are seeking a talented Accounting Policy and Technical Accounting Lead for our Charlotte, NC or San Antonio, TX facility.

This position does NOT have the option of working fully remote.

The actual onsite days are settled between each employee and the employee's manager. Candidates are expected to live a commutable distance from our offices in San Antonio, TX or Charlotte, NC.

This Accounting Policy Lead will work in support of the Bank and Bank Holding Company Regulatory Report owners and other key partners by providing interpretive guidance on regulatory reporting requirements. This position will provide counsel on the impact of changes in regulatory reporting instructions, changes in US GAAP and assessment of non-standard business transactions, working collaboratively to resolve impact on regulatory reports

Tasks:

  • Identifies and manages existing and emerging risks that stem from business activities and the job role.

  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.

  • Follows written risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for business activities.

  • Assesses USAA's financial activity to determine what accounting policies are needed and leads efforts to write, update and publish accounting policies by following new standards, protocols and governance including updates required to key executives.

  • Leads accounting and reporting research activities for the USAA companies on complex business transactions and provides appropriate technical accounting interpretation on the application of GAAP and/or SAP or both to management and other stakeholders on the analysis of alternatives, and where applicable, execution considerations.

  • Prepares documentation supporting USAA's accounting positions taken on significant or complex transactions

  • Accountable for USAA's position with regards to external auditor's technical accounting and reporting inquiries.

  • Performs accounting and documentation for complex areas of accounting, such as hedge accounting, Variable Interest Entity / consolidation analysis and contingencies.

  • Leads teams on special studies and research/analysis of accounting impact of financial and operational issues. Drives efforts to assess and communicate the impact of new and emerging accounting standards to management and impacted stakeholders. Makes recommendations on courses of action.

  • Drives and helps support accounting processes and decisions that need to be made regarding new business transactions and strategies, as well as issue resolution and agreement on compliance and accounting standards.

  • Routinely interacts with senior management; makes recommendations to solve current and long-term accounting policy matters.

  • Serves as a resource to team members on escalated accounting policy issues of a complex nature. Teaches others about accounting policy; ensuring knowledge transfer to less experienced team members; reviews work of other, less experienced team members.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

  • Certified Public Accountant designation.

Minimum Experience:

  • 8 years experience in progressive roles within accounting and/or financial reporting.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform and effectively communicate the results of technical accounting research.

  • Experience reviewing, interpreting, and influencing accounting policies in a financial services environment.

  • Experience leading or coaching team members on accounting or finance topics.

  • Expert knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and/or Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP).

  • Experience with developing, implementing and communicating new policies and processes to comply with accounting standards.

  • Experience performing technical accounting research and documentation of complex accounting and reporting analyses.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with regulatory reporting and supporting requests from regulatory authorities

  • Ability to coordinate and work closely with reporting teams, other business units, legal and compliance.

  • Strong writing and communication skills and experience applying technical accounting knowledge in policies and memos

  • Strategic problem solver who is comfortable and successful working independently that can come with point of view and initiate needed action.

  • Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration (MBA)

Compensation:

USAA has an effective method for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market position. The salary range for this skill is: $117,600 - $211,700*

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance or at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.

Geographical Differential: Geographic pay differential is additional pay provided to eligible employees working in locations where market pay levels are above the national average.

Shift premium: will be addressed on an individual-basis for applicable roles that are consistently scheduled for non-core hours.
