Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Design and deliver meaningful, measurable features in our highly scalable cloud applications, directly enhancing our customer's VDI experiences.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

This team is looking for a proven software engineer who can contribute to our Horizon cloud services product, improve its functionality, and make it easier for our customers to configure and use our application and desktop remoting solution on the cloud with ease of management and monitoring. The team is very passionate about the work, product, and we are looking for a similarly passionate, creative, and self-motivated engineer who is a quick learner and can deliver on end-to-end responsibility. You should be flexible and willing to work in a constantly changing environment with the right attitude and deliver on our promise to our customers, partners, and ourselves.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a significant contributor in a strong engineering team spanning multiple geographies in a fast-paced environment.

  • Requirements, design, implementation, execution, debugging, and test automation using Java

  • Breathe, live, and champion one or more architectural facets of the product, propose product roadmaps, and nurture the migration into a pure cloud world.

  • Focus on the products' architectural goals, ability to take an open-ended problem, architect and design an elegant and comprehensible solution.

  • Be the champion for attaining a higher quality bar with an emphasis on reliable automated tests with continuous integration in an agile environment.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years as a developer and a flair for building cloud solutions and/or microservices in Azure/AWS or similar (GCP)

  • Track record of designing and developing reusable, high-performant, and scalable systems.

  • Experienced Java coding skills and at least one scripting language (Ex: Python, shell, JavaScript, etc.)

  • Extensive recent project experience (2-3 years) in web technologies like RESTful APIs, Spring boot based microservices development, and Kubernetes or Docker frameworks, as well as experience in technologies such as MongoDB, Elastic Search, Redis, Kafka

  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills

  • Quick learner, self-motivated, and can work independently

  • You have strong verbal, written communication skills and a collaborative problem-solving style.

  • Bachelors / Masters Degree in Computer Science or equivalent

What is the primary need, technical challenge, or problem you will be responsible for?

The Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) product known as Workspace ONE continues to be industry leading in terms of customer adoption, capabilities, and innovation. As a result of that success and of our customer's expectations, we are currently working to modernize the Workspace ONE platform to allow it to scale for the next set of new business opportunities and leading-edge use cases. This modernization effort involves updating process, adding new tooling, adding support for mixed infrastructure (public cloud, on-premises, hybrid, containers), and improving the observability of the system.

Adding to the challenge, we are doing this while 'keeping the lights-on' for customers using the current platform version in their production environments. What is the primary need, technical challenge, or problem you will be responsible for?

The Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) product known as Workspace ONE continues to be industry leading in terms of customer adoption, capabilities, and innovation. As a result of that success and of our customer's expectations, we are currently working to modernize the Workspace ONE platform to allow it to scale for the next set of new business opportunities and leading-edge use cases. This modernization effort involves updating process, adding new tooling, adding support for mixed infrastructure (public cloud, on-premises, hybrid, containers), and improving the observability of the system.

Adding to the challenge, we are doing this while 'keeping the lights-on' for customers using the current platform version in their production environments. We are looking for a senior software engineer who can thrive in such an environment and help us execute this vision. You should have experience shipping production applications, the ability to identify the right tools and technologies for the problem being addressed and understand the implications of technology choices on day-two operational challenges. We have high engineering standards, and we want you to help make us better.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Success in the role is defined by the ability to consistently create high quality code that addresses the business requirement, and is well tested, performant, and maintainable.

  • You will develop a solid understanding of the platform and functionality it supports in the context of the larger platform. This would be demonstrated by your ability to deliver features and fix bugs, proficiency handling production escalations and being the established service owner for one or two key services.

  • You can drive effective design and code reviews; a primary part of this role is mentoring junior engineers

  • You are leading engineering design and development efforts including providing guidance to several engineers building services, ensuring that the solution can be scaled horizontally and deployed on the UEM control plane using shared components for messaging, caching, logging, and monitoring

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

Most of your time will be spent writing high-quality code based on engineering team coding standards that include excellent test coverage using C# or Java. You can expect to be the owner and take accountability for the quality of your code. You will need to become familiar with the market we operate in and problems the product addresses. Understand the challenges and limitations of the existing system. Demonstrate the ability to contribute to engineering roadmap and design discussions considering both these.

You will help lead refactor and redesign efforts that involve driving order-of-magnitude performance improvement in services while ensuring they are extensible to support innovative new use cases. The team currently has 50+ developers and growing. Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Within the first 6 months of employment:

  • Acquire a good understanding of vSAN architecture and overall vSAN IO path.

  • Contribute code changes or features of low complexity and familiarize with the code base.

Within 1 year of employment:

  • Responsible for designing and implementing medium complexity features.

  • Participate in design discussions, feature development and debugging activities.

  • Collaborate with various vSAN engineering teams to deliver high quality solutions.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Design and implement in-kernel distributed storage systems components or features.

  • Deliver high quality and robust code in the C programming language.

  • Participate in debugging and fixing software defects.

  • Collaborate with senior engineers, expand your knowledge, and propose improvements.

  • Work with various teams to ensure that features interop seamlessly and maintain product extensibility, compatibility, and quality.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

This position reports to a Senior Engineering Manager in vSAN who, in the past, has worked in the capacity of technical lead in vSAN and as a senior engineer on other storage products within VMWare. The leadership team promotes integrity, innovation, knowledge sharing, on-going personal development, humility, and trust.

Where is the role located?

The role is based in the US with the option of working remotely, or in the office in Boston, or in the office in Palo Alto.

For US based candidates, the annual pay range (OTE for commissioned roles; Salary for other roles) for this position is: $101,000 - $230,000. The actual offer will be based on the role, location, and individual candidate experience. Bonus, commission, and/or equity may be eligible for this position.
