Provides high level technical tasks while managing and reviewing design related specifications, calculations, reports and plans. What You'll Do:

  • Responsible for development of the project scope and fee quotation and assists in the preparation of technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).

  • Serves as the primary client liaison and manages the project team to deliver the scope, schedule, and budgets to completion and to the client's satisfaction. Leads client contract scoping and negotiations.

  • Performs technical discipline tasks including analysis, reports, design, specification, and production for assigned projects.

  • Implements the firm's project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) on each project. Leads the development and the execution of the project management plan. Supervises and mentors team to overall project objectives.

  • Responsible for/oversees project staffing, including, but not limited to; recruitment, development, retention and succession of project staff; development of plan for project staff reporting; and support for performance and compensation reviews.

  • Partners with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to assist with business development, building client relationships, and pursuit efforts for mega and super mega projects in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA). Works with the project team and marketing resources to prepare appropriate proposal and presentation materials. Leads proposal development and interview presentations for strategic, mini-mega or mega projects to the client as well as general presentations within the industry and community.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 12 years of relevant experience

We are currently seeking a Resident Engineer II for our Chicago, Illinois, Construction Services team to continue to grow our Great Lakes Division practice. We are looking for collaborative, self-starters with at least 12 years' construction management experience on heavy civil projects such as bridge, roadway, and aviation. Experience working with the City of Chicago, Chicago Department of Transportation, Illinois Department of Transportation, Cook County and Tollway agencies is highly desirable. The Resident Engineer II will be responsible for coordination and monitoring of all field construction administration activities to ensure construction projects are completed in compliance with the design and contractual documents, within budget, and on schedule.

  • Provides interpretation and enforcement of contract plans and specifications. Develops strategies with the contractor to create submittal packages that conform to schedule requirements.

  • Confirms change order requests, develops estimates, negotiates costs, and writes change orders.

  • Provides cost control on projects and quality control within discipline.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • 12 Years of relevant experience.

  • Experience on alternative delivery projects, including GC/CM and/or Design-Build.

  • OSHA 30 Hour Safety Training Certification

  • Understanding of construction methods, including standards, equipment, processes, and safety considerations, and an ability to reads and interpret complex contract documents.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to maintain good working relationships with project team, clients, and contractors.

  • Ability to anticipate problems and proactively develop solutions to overcome those problems.

  • Proficiency with computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Bluebeam, & Adobe, mobile devices such as tablet computers, and CM software programs.

  • A valid driver's license and good driving record.

  • Work frequently requires working at client's job site, construction trailer, and in a field environment. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment, and walking.

Administrative functions may include welcoming visitors, receiving and directing incoming calls, ordering, stocking and organizing supplies in the kitchen and supply closet, coordinating luncheons/events, coordinating with building management, maintaining calendars, scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, processing expense reports, distributing mail, filing, IT system coordination (servers, network upgrades, etc under close direction from the division IT staff), new hire IT setups maintenance and cleaning request coordination, and performing other duties to support the office staff, as needed. Utilizes Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Oracle Business Suite, and various HNTB software applications to perform tasks.

Additionally, this position will serve as Deputy Michigan Office Coordinator, which is a role that acts as a point of contact for employee questions, directs to the proper person or department (HR, HRSC, Payroll, etc) and supports new hire orientation for hires in Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Jackson office locations.

The Deputy Office Coordinator role also ensures proper legal posters are displayed at each location, organizes company events when offered by the firm (Flu shots, bio-metric screening, professional photography, etc), coordinates terminations, distributes packets to departing employee & manager, and tracks and inputs Affirmative Action activities for office, and other duties, as assigned. This will require occasional travel to East Lansing and Jackson for new hire orientation.

  • Consults with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommends solutions, assists in the resolution of issues, and acts as a liaison with the engineer of record.

  • Remains current and knowledgeable of industry technology and tools used to perform inspection work through industry resources, training, and research. Gains exposure to new technology and utilizes it (GPS/Rovers) to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.

  • Mentors and trains staff.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Associates degree in relevant field and 6 years relevant experience, or

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or related field and 4 years relevant experience.

What You'll Bring:

  • Identifies and resolves issues with basic change conditions with oversight from the project engineer.

  • Develops working relationships with agency staff and stakeholders.

  • Operates relevant testing equipment as needed for the project.

  • Understands Microsoft Office Suite and computer skills at an advanced level.

  • Understands document control for the project (i.e., materials documentation of RFI, contractor payment, contractor employment records) at an advanced level with oversight from more experienced staff.

What We Prefer:

  • Construction Manager-in-Training (CMIT), Certified Associate Construction Manager (CACM), Certified Construction Manager (CCM) Certifications. Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)/Engineer in Training (EIT), Professional Engineer, Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.

  • OSHA 30 certification.

  • Proficiency with computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Bluebeam, & Adobe, mobile devices such as tablet computers, and CM software programs.

  • Familiarity with engineering, architectural, and construction documents.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to maintain good working relationships with project team, clients, and contractors.

  • Ability to anticipate problems, proactively develop solutions to overcome those problems, and discern when escalation is necessary.

  • Some flexibility to work hours dictated by the Contractor's schedule

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, and available to work Onsight when the contractor is working.
