Job Description

What We're Looking For

Responsible for leading the development and execution of the project management plan while building and maintaining effective and meaningful client relationships. This position serves as the primary client liaison responsible for managing and delivering all aspects of one or more mega ($5M+) and/or super mega ($25M+) projects including contracting, project controls, quality, risk and change management. The Project Director implements the firm's project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) on each project.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Lead practice building of HNTB's Central States office transportation planning market.

  • Maintain and build relationships with the Central States office foundation clients and support the Central Division's transportation planning practice.

  • Responsible for consistent management and delivery of mega and super mega projects that contribute to the success of the office.

  • Coordinate with the Office Leader and Group Directors to implement the office strategic plan.

  • Serve key roles as Pursuit Champion or Project Manager to pursue mega and super mega opportunities

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master's degree

  • 20 years relevant experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification

  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develops and nurtures key client relationships and is the primary company contact on assigned projects. Communicates effectively with clients to identify needs and evaluate alternative business solutions and strategies.

  • Responsible for financial performance on projects. Proactive management of cash, budget, schedule and project scope to ensure adherence to project goals and completion to the client's satisfaction.

  • Sets priorities, obtains commitments, and engages required resources through collaboration with Group Directors, Department Managers and/or Section Managers to staff projects according to the project Work Plan.

  • Collaborates with office and division leadership in solving challenges and ensuring business objectives are met.

  • Supervises and mentors' team to achieve overall project objectives. Where appropriate, oversees the project's Project Manager(s). Responsible for/oversees project staffing, including, but not limited to; recruitment, hiring, development, retention and succession of project staff; development of plan for project staff reporting; and support for performance and compensation reviews.

  • Leads pursuits of mega projects and/or actively involved as part of the pursuit team for super mega projects. Partners with Client Service Leaders to develop long term strategies to identify and pursue additional business opportunities with key clients and with pursuit champions on efforts for mega and super mega projects in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA). Works with the pursuit team and marketing resources to prepare appropriate proposal and presentation materials. Leads interview and proposal presentations to the client as well as general presentations within the industry.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field and 12 years of relevant experience

  • 4 years experience successfully managing and delivering mega and/or super mega projects

What We're Looking For

Responsible for the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects. This position works closely with the project manager to perform research, development, calculations, design and delivery. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity. Leverages technical knowledge, experience and client relationships to assist in the execution and evaluation of project designs. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project execution using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software. May mentor, train and review work of junior engineer staff and provide constructive feedback. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB's clients.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Perform design calculations, geometric design, modeling and plan production of roadway, temporary and permanent traffic control plans, quantities, Engineer's estimates and final specifications.

  • Utilize Microstation and Geopak to complete engineering design and 3D models.

  • Provide complete design efforts with direction from and in coordination with an experienced engineering design team

The successful candidate will assist with geotechnical evaluation and computations to support design of foundations, retaining structures and other earth- and rock-supported elements. Responsibilities:

Within the Geotechnical Engineering specialty, learn and complete specific geotechnical design analyses under general supervision. Design elements include deep foundations, earth retaining systems, ground improvement procedures, embankments and cut slopes, levees and dams.

  • Responsible for completion of discipline engineering project elements such as reports, designs, specifications and plans

  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers

  • Complete geotechnical analyses, report preparation, and design efforts with minimal direction and that are responsive to project needs including design criteria, quality, schedule and budget requirements

  • Develop subsurface exploration and laboratory testing programs

  • Coordinate with subconsultants including oversight of subconsultant's budget, deliverables, and schedule

  • Review geotechnical laboratory data and subconsultant deliverables for conformance with applicable testing and project standards

  • Correlate and interpret field and laboratory results for use in analyses

  • Provide geotechnical analysis, design and reports for shallow and deep foundations, earth retaining systems, ground improvement procedures, embankments and cut slopes, levees and dams

  • Develop or review specifications and plan notes related to geotechnical design elements (e.g. earthwork and foundations)

  • Provide support for design review and adhere to project quality management plan

  • Work closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects

  • Communicate effectively with geotechnical lead on the job, other discipline's designers and sub consultants

  • Perform construction observation of earthwork, foundation installation, wall construction and pavement construction

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Interpret and evaluate subsurface exploration and lab testing data

  • Perform geotechnical engineering analysis computations

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering (emphasis in geotechnical engineering)

  • PE with ability to obtain PE registration and license in multiple states within 1 year

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in geotechnical analyses, geotechnical field services, and report preparation

  • Knowledge of geotechnical investigation techniques and laboratory testing procedures
