Job Description Summary: The Veterinary Assistant is a key member of the hospital team who supports and assists the veterinarians and veterinary technicians, ensuring the safety of pets, clients and other associates, and the continuity of quality veterinary care. Preferred Education/Licenses: Certificate of completion from a NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant program or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Preferred Experience: Must be able to perform all required skills of NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant programs at a level that aids in the efficiency of the practice. A Day in the Life of a Banfield Veterinary Assistant The Vet Assistant provides professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times, making sure that clients and pets are comfortable in the hospital. You will use your technical skills on a daily basis, within state practice acts and as outlined in the NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties. Other responsibilities include: Helping maintain the flow of patients Communicating with the veterinarian and vet techs Carrying out or setting up procedures that do not require veterinarian or vet tech assistance Adhering to hospital standards that keep pets safe, and the treatment areas, exam rooms and labs clean and organized Educating clients about our Optimum Wellness Plans R and the importance of preventive care Mentoring other members of the hospital team Commitment Beyond Qualifications Every associate including the Vet Assistant has an important contribution to make to the veterinary team. Summary and Qualifications:

Ensure hospital facilities in their region are maintained in good condition and working order by identifying, managing, and performing facility and medical equipment repairs and preventive maintenance.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Identify, manage, perform, measure, schedule and track facility repair and preventive maintenance tasks in accordance to practice standards, including but not limited to:

  • Drive doctor engagement and retention efforts in partnership with DVQ, POCP and operations by implementing strategies to reduce turnover risk and provide consistent support at the hospital level. Support the engagement and retention of certified veterinary technicians (CVTs).

  • Responsible for medical equipment inventory and functionality in assigned hospitals and manage requests for additional medical equipment in partnership with the DVQ and Regional Vice President of Veterinary Quality (VPVQ).

  • Partner with the Practice Manager (PM) to manage medical equipment maintenance and calibration in accordance with practice and equipment supplier standards.

  • Actively participate in local, state, and national veterinary organizations to cultivate relationships within the veterinary profession (i.e. regulatory boards, vendors, associations, and referral hospitals) to promote Banfield's brand reputation.

  • Ensure hospital operations meet all local, state and federal regulatory requirements including but not limited to compliance with controlled substance management and radiation safety.

. Maintain the flow of the Cycle of Service in accordance to position. Provide Client Education regarding preventive care, Optimum Wellness Plans, and basic status of hospitalized pets. Serve as support to the Client Services Coordinator staff on an as-needed basis.

. Hold or restrain pets during examination, treatment, or inoculation.

. Prepare routine in-house laboratory tests (e.g. canine heartworm, feline leukemia, FIV, and canine parvovirus) as allowed by state rules and regulations.

. Monitor the comfort of hospitalized patients. Ensure the comfort of hospitalized patients by "walking", exercising, feeding, and cleaning cages and pet (when approved by the veterinarian or veterinary technician).

. Bathe and dip pets when necessary to treat dermatological conditions (when advised by veterinarian or veterinary technician.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING

  • Certificate of completion from a NAVTA approved Veterinary Assistant program, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • Must be able to perform all required skills of NAVTA approved veterinary assistant programs at a level in which to aid in the efficiency of the practice.

  • Must be at least 18 years old to perform duties involving radiography (x-ray) and exposure to radioactive substances.

  • One year related experience required with customer service preferred.
