Phlebotomist - St. Charles Hospital

Job Summary:

The Laboratory Department is looking for a Phlebotomist to join our growing team. The Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing quality blood samples from patients, preparing those specimens for lab testing, and completing clerical duties in a timely manner to maintain the department efficiently. Responsibilities will include order entry, result look-up, report generation, and answering internal/external calls in a friendly and helpful manner.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides excellent customer service skills by greeting patients and the community in a respectful manner

  • Collects all specimens according to established procedures from patients and ensures that they are properly processed

  • Identifying patients accurately and matching the patient's identity with the correct service is critical for patient safety

  • Responsible for data entry and processing of specimen by labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as requested by test orders

  • Performs departmental-related clerical duties such as checking inventory, stock supplies, and answer phones as needed

  • Must possess the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly

  • Other duties as assigned

Education:

  • High School Degree or GED

Licensure/Certification:

  • Phlebotomist Certification preferred but not required

Experience:

  • One-year phlebotomy experience preferred but not required

  • Customer service in a retail or service environment preferred

Job Summary:

The Sterile Processing Technician Certified, under general supervision, will inspect, clean, assemble, test, and processes patient care equipment, supplies, and instruments according to established policies and procedures and according to manufacturer's instructions for use. They will act in accordance to sterility per the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), The Joint Commission (JCAHO), Center for Disease Control (CDC), and state standards of practice. Primary duties may vary depending on area assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs decontamination functions including manual cleaning and processing of surgical instrumentation and patient care equipment according to manufacturer's instructions for use.

  • Applies proper knowledge of various detergents and chemical disinfectants for use in the decontamination and removal of blood, bone, and other body tissues from contaminated surgical equipment. Adheres to standard precautions while performing cleaning and sterilization duties.

  • Inventories, stocks, and delivers supplies, carts, equipment to all facility areas as indicated per facility guidelines. Orders, restocks, labels, and maintains proper inventory levels. Rotates stock, inspecting for outdates per market requirements.

  • Performs and documents quality control aspects of sterile processing using various information technology systems focusing on instrument tracking, surgery schedules, surgeon preference cards, supply ordering and management. Accurately maintains comprehensive quality assurance standards related to sterilization and infection control.

  • Operates and understands various sterilizers and sterilizing techniques required to produce sterile packages for use in the surgical setting keeping package assembly aseptic protocols in mind. Monitors sterilization regularly ensuring quality assurance through chemical and biological indicators and integrators.

  • Documents all activities as required within the outlined processes and reports variances that may affect the outcome of sterile products or patient care and safety.

  • Identifies and resolves infection control issues in and around transport of biological hazardous materials, including the use of universal precautions and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as sterile product identification.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the operation and testing of washers and/or disinfectors, steam, and hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilizers, and other facility specific equipment and instrumentation.

  • Identifies surgical instrumentation by surgical specialty: General, Gynecological, Robotic, ENT, Orthopedics, Neurological, Vascular, Obstetrical, Urological, etcetera. Including functionality testing, assembly and disassembly as required according to manufacturer's instructions for use.

  • Participates in ongoing educational and competency verification opportunities.

  • Participates in the orientation of new staff and students as assigned.

  • Participates in the continuing development of personnel in the Operating Room.

  • Accessible for "on call" as scheduled and is available within the time frames as indicated by the department.

Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

- Executes the treatment plan as developed by the provider and interdisciplinary team members.

- Continuously evaluates the patient's response to the nursing interventions, quality of patient care and care environment to ensure optimal patient outcomes are met.

- Participates in the safe management of the milieu, intervening effectively with patients who are having coping difficulty, utilizing therapeutic prevention/intervention techniques.

- Acts as the patient advocate.

- BSMH nurses are expected to practice and deliver care in accordance with the core concepts and intention of the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.

Job Summary:

  • Provides the necessary leadership, direction and documentation to effectively supervise and motivate staff, and promotes a 'team' approach to problem solving and goal setting within assigned areas. Maintains professionalism and excellent communication within the practice and between the practice and other practices, hospitals, and entities. Counsels and/or supports practice managers in counseling employees regarding employment, performance, promotion and termination in accordance with Human Resource policies. Remains accessible to staff and providers, highly visible and on site frequently.

  • Develops a strategy to handle new and varied tasks by initiating and conducting assessments to determine appropriate interventions, as well as conducting research and identifying resources to make recommendations for successful completion of assigned projects.

  • Oversees the patient experience, including appointment scheduling, timely and appropriate management of telephone calls, waiting room experience, work flow during visits, referral management and translation services.Creates actions to improve patient satisfaction and respond to patient concerns. Minimum Years and Type of Experience: At least three years of healthcare management experience with two years management in multiple physician practices or physician networks in multiple practice locations preferred.

Job Summary:

The Certified Medical Assistant is a key component of our team that works closely with the primary care physician to deliver excellent patient care to our community, ensuring services are provided within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines. The Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for reviewing and updating health records, measuring vital signs, and preparing treatment rooms for upcoming examinations.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides excellent customer service skills by greeting patients and the community in a respectful manner

Job Summary:

The Emergency Room (ER) Registered Nurse (RN) position is responsible for delivering exceptional nursing care to patients by:

Job Summary:

The Histotechnologist will perform various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination by the Pathologist. The Histology Technologist needs to ensure tissue specimens received from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the standards required. This role has a greater focus on troubleshooting, problem-solving, and methodology, which contains fewer common techniques and requires a deeper understanding of the chemistry and diseases behind tissue identification and test selection.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining

  • Assists the Pathologist in the gross examination of surgical specimens and in frozen section procedures

  • Report accurate and timely test results to deliver quality patient care

  • Document problems that may affect test performance and perform corrective actions when needed

  • Operates and maintains all histology area lab equipment in the proper state of readiness, cleanliness, and sharpens and hone microtome knives

  • Monitors inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used, and places orders for replacements as required

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education:

  • High School Degree or GED

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Histology

Certifications:

  • Histotechnologist (HLT) Certification by a nationally recognized certification agency (preferably ASCP) (preferred, not required)

Experience:

  • One year of Histology experience preferred, not required

  • One year of Clinical Lab experience preferred, not required

Respiratory Care Practitioner III - Harbour View Medical Center

Job Summary:

The Respiratory Care Practitioner III is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education and evaluation. Performs all respiratory care procedures including but not limited to oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services and patient and staff education. Monitors the patient's response to such therapies and makes recommendations to change or modify based on the assessment.

Essential Functions:

  • May provide clinical instruction and/or in-service training to department staff, other healthcare team members, and students.

  • Provides support to clinical learning through mentorship, clinical rounds and practice evaluation provides clinical leadership for the advancement of professional respiratory practice to staff in the intensive care, general care, and outpatient services.

  • Provides feedback for coaching and performance evaluations of team members.

  • Assists with identifying quality improvement initiatives and design programs that provide measurable outcomes. Leads clinical research initiatives ensuring education, training, and implementation of the study design.

  • May be responsible for data collection and accurate record keeping as well as product evaluation and assessment.

  • Actively participates in facility councils and committees.

  • Serves as the shift -Charge Therapist- with responsibility of ensuring adequate number of respiratory care staff to cover patient care areas and needs. This may include assigning respiratory care staff to work areas and/or work assignments, modifying work assignments, assisting with meal coverage, fielding call offs and providing adequate staffing levels for the next shift.

  • May assist physician performing procedures such as bronchoscopy, transtracheal catheter insertion, tracheotomy in intubation (if intubation is performed by respiratory therapy in the facility), and invasive monitoring.

  • Performs CPR including closed chest compressions and airway management techniques in accordance with the AHA ACLS protocol.

  • Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve maintenance of a patient airway, including use of appropriate airways including endotracheal tubes, nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal airways, maintenance of airway humidification, aspiration of secretions, extubation, maintenance of correct ETT cuff pressures and documents procedures in patient and department records.

  • Selects, assembles, monitors and evaluates mechanical ventilators for proper function and operation, including correction of malfunctions, cleanliness and determines appropriateness use for patient condition.

  • May perform pulmonary function tests (PFT).

  • Serves as a preceptor to new team members and/or students.

  • Assesses patient's physical status by inspection, palpation, auscultation, percussion, patient behavior and reviewing existing data in patient's record.

  • Performs treatments according to physician orders, explains therapy and therapeutic goals to patient; modifies treatment procedures based on patient response.

  • Determines appropriateness of prescribed therapy and recommends methods to physician to achieve therapeutic goals including IPPB, Aerosol therapy, Postural drainage and percussion, ultrasonic nebulizer, incentive spirometry, metered dose inhalers and spacers, etc.

  • Sets up and maintains different modes of oxygen therapy, to maintain adequate PaO2's with accurate inspired levels of oxygen.

  • Administers intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) or Aerosol Therapy by first preparing the prescribed medication ordered by the physician and adjusting the machine or device to accomplish patient's individual clinical needs; document and observe patient's vital signs, productivity of cough, relief of Dyspnea, improved breath sounds and any adverse reactions to therapy; and use judgement and technical skill to determine possible adverse reactions and suggestions for appropriateness of therapy.

  • Gives postural drainage, vibration, percussion to ensure proper drainage of bronchial secretions by use of manual or mechanical percussion; check orders and X-rays for segments to be treated prior to initiating treatment; auscultation prior to and after procedure to note presence of clearance of secretions and response to therapy.

  • Instructs patients and families in incentive spirometer, metered dose inhaler (MDI) administration, postural drainage and clapping, oxygen therapy, ventilator care and home aerosol therapy.

  • Procurement of sputum for culture and sensitivity or airway clearance either by patient coaching, administration of mucolytics, aerosol therapy or endotracheal / nasopharyngeal suctioning.

  • Evaluates normal and pathologic blood and urine laboratory value ranges.

  • Performs arterial punctures and analysis; has an in-depth knowledge of analysis and arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation. Performs arterial line procedures, takes safety precautions, sterile procedure, flushing, and ABG aspirations.

  • May perform EKG's; understands electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias.

  • Maintains all Respiratory Therapy equipment and supplies.

  • Responds to cardio-pulmonary resuscitations and actively participates as indicated by clinical circumstances.
