Job Description

Do you love being a caregiver and have a sincere passion for working with seniors? Our Resident Care Associates do too! Our direct care team consists of people with their Personal Care Aide (PCA) and/or Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) certification or a willingness to obtain this. We will train you! This team cares for our residents in a number of ways including personal needs, grooming and hygiene, housekeeping, laundering, social interactions, and meals. The main objective of this position is to possess a big heart and a need to serve while you monitor the residents' comfort and respond to their physical and emotional needs.

This position is the first step in becoming a nurse! This position often grows into a Registered Medication Aide (RMA) and can grow into leadership opportunities at our communities. Team members can pursue a nursing education and Commonwealth Senior Living will assist with paying for education and providing training! Their role is to assist the Dining Services Director (Executive Chef) in serving our residents amazingly delicious meals, in their home. They also support the creation and execution of our signature dining services programs. These culinary team members provide friendly, responsive service to create an exceptional and memorable dining experience for all of our residents. We serve Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner as well as two snacks, seven days a week. No late nights or super early mornings!

This position often grows into leadership opportunities at our communitites through following in the steps of the Dining Services Director. In 2015, Commonwealth won a -Best Practice Award- from the Virginia Assisted Living Association for our Farm to Table Program. Qualifications

- This employee must have successfully completed course work and examinations to

obtain certification as a Resident Care Associate.

- The RMA must obtain continuing education credits as required by the state to maintain

certification as a RMA and must provide evidence of continued certification to the

community in a timely and accurate manner.

- The RMA must possess knowledge of safe medication administration technique and

demonstrate this knowledge with a medication error rate of 5% or below.

- The RMA must recognize complications, adverse actions or side effects of medications

and obtain input from the Resident Care Director as indicated to ensure the optimum

health and safety of the resident.

- The RMA must understand and practice resident confidentiality.

Areas of Primary Responsibility

- Administers and accurately records the administration of medications for residents as

prescribed by the physician in accordance with established policies and procedures of

Commonwealth Senior Living and applicable state/federal regulations. Observes,

records and reports to the Resident Care Director, or designee, symptoms and

conditions of residents that could be related to medication interactions, adverse drug

reactions or medication side effects.

- Determines and records effectiveness of medications in a timely and accurate manner

as required by state and federal regulations and provides and promotes resident's rights

during the administration of medications.

- Stores medications in a safe and accurate manner in accordance with established

policies and procedures of Commonwealth Senior Living and applicable state/federal

regulations.

- Monitors medications to ensure adequate accountability measures are taken when

medications are ordered, received into the community, administered and at change of

shift as required by policies and procedures of Commonwealth Senior Living and

applicable state/federal regulations.

- Routinely inspects, cleans and monitors equipment and supplies to ensure resident

safety. Reports any equipment or supply issues to the Resident Care Director for

correction or repair.

- Obtains, records and reports vital signs as indicated during the administration of

medications.

- Demonstrates awareness of proper infection control practice by using Universal

Precautions and following policies and procedures of the company, including OSHA's

Blood-borne Pathogen Standard.

- Communicates to residents, staff and others in accurate and factual manner and seeks

clarification from or refers questions to Resident Care Director when indicated.

the residents according to their care plan. Contributes to the care planning process by

providing the charge nurse or other care planning staff with specific information and

observations of the residents' needs and preferences.

- Communicates and interacts effectively and tactfully with the residents, visitors,

families, peers and supervisors promoting a homelike environment.

- Fully understands all aspects of residents' rights, including the right to be free of

restraints and free of abuse. Is responsible for promptly reporting to the charge nurse or

administrative staff incidents or evidence of resident abuse or violation of residents'

rights.

- Performs all job responsibilities in accordance with prescribed safety and infection

control procedures, including thorough hand washing, use of disposable gloves where

indicated and proper disposal of soiled materials. Also providing care that maintains

each resident's skin integrity to prevent pressure ulcers, skin tears and other damage by

changing incontinent residents, turning, repositioning immobile residents and by

applying moisturizers to fragile skin and other areas.
