Job Summary

The Transmission Forestry System Arborist has responsibility for the following areas:

Bare Ground Program: Assumes full responsibility for the coordination, administration, financial tracking, and quality monitoring of the substation bare ground vegetation control program for transmission and distribution substations system wide. Independently works with Supply Chain to conduct the bid process, providing scope of work and specifications and evaluating vendors for contract awards based on their ability to perform. Coordinates scheduling between contract forces and substation personnel to arrange for escorts for herbicide applicators working inside substations, tracks completed work and approves final payment

Capital Project Support: Supports Project Managers and Permitting Specialists on capital projects by creating landscape plans or reviewing landscape plans created by outside sources which are required before the permitting and construction process can proceed. Provides scope of work and specifications for landscape installation contracts and independently implements installation of landscape plans for permitted projects while negotiating through the execution of plans and related functions with stakeholders, including governmental regulators and property owners. Attends public open house workshops and meetings in the early stages of the permitting process to discuss visual and vegetation-related impacts of upcoming capital projects,

Transmission Vegetation Maintenance Support: Supports Transmission Forestry Coordinators by providing ornamental alternatives to undesirable vegetation removed from landscapes on private and public properties, often negotiating landscape replacement alternatives with the property owner or government entity to resolve complaints and claims. Administers Transmission Forestry Fee Owned Mowing Contracts. Is available for major storm restoration work and required to spend extended periods of long hours escorting and directing tree crews during those efforts

Facilities Maintenance Support: Supports Facility Services and Substation Supervisors with landscape maintenance concerns at Substations and Company Facilities and coordinates specialized vegetation management at critical substation locations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Experience: 6+ years of directly related experience (Utility Arboriculture) *Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of arboriculture, urban horticulture, ornamental plant installation, landscape design, dendrology, landscape maintenance principals, tree trimming techniques, and herbicide application

  • Advanced knowledge of the identification of trees and growth habits, use of herbicides, rehabilitation, right of way management

  • Experience creating landscape plans, utilizing related design software

  • Strong knowledge of electric principles and transmission circuitry

  • Strong knowledge of accounting and contract administration

  • Skills: Strong written and oral communications, strong customer service, effective organizational and project management

  • Abilities: Demonstrated problem-solving and quick decision-making, setting priorities, working independently, public relations, interpersonal and leadership

  • Physical attributes required to perform essentials of the job: Driving long distances (up to 3000 miles per month), walking, climbing, stooping, bending, and hearing

  • Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined (above/below)

Education Requirements

Education Level: Bachelor Degree preferred (or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education)

Disciplines Preferred: Horticulture

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

**The successful candidate must have current, or be able to obtain within 12 months, the following certifications / licenses of being hired into the position:

  • Retains current Arborist Certification from the International Society of Arboriculture

  • Current Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Certification from the Department of Environmental Quality

  • Current Commercial Applicator (Pesticide) Certification from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

  • Current Certified Horticulturalist from the Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association

  • Current Certified Designer from the Virginia Society of Landscape Designers.
