Job Description

JMT is seeking a Design Engineer to join the Syracuse, New York office. The Design Engineer is responsible for engineering design and field inspection and of transportation infrastructure features, such as highways, bridges, and drainage using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering tasks in the transportation infrastructure field through application of relevant design criteria, standards and processes.

  • Perform alternative studies

  • Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, bridge inspections, aerial photography and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects

  • Perform design computations

  • Prepare design plans and details

  • Assist with preparing construction cost estimates and write specifications

  • Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality

  • Assist with field work including surveying, bridge inspection and construction inspection

  • Assist with environmental sampling (Water, soil, etc)

  • Writing technical reports

Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Experience working with CADD software (Bentley preferred) and traffic engineering modeling (Synchro or HCS)

  • Proficiency using a PC Office Suite (Word Processing, Spreadsheets)

  • Knowledge of design and drafting procedures

  • General knowledge of survey

  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and estimates

  • Strong analytical, writing, and public speaking skills

Required Experience

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology's Engineering Accreditation Commission (ABET/EAC)

OR

  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a relevant field accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ABET/ETAC)

AND

  • Active motor vehicle driver's license

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily within a general office environment with occasional field visitations. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
