SPACE MEDICAL RESEARCH ENGINEER

SpaceX is expanding the world's human spaceflight capability and revolutionizing human spaceflight operations. The Space Medicine team is responsible for developing the concept of operations, medical system, research and monitoring protocols as well as the technology necessary to ensure the safety and health of the crewmembers that fly on SpaceX missions. SpaceX aims to help democratize space travel by facilitating research through a novel commercial space research platform. As a medical research engineer, you'll work with the SpaceX medical team, NASA, and other customers to steer the future of this new research program. You will lead project management, research selection, and development of the research platform to understand human health and support space exploration.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Take ownership of the SpaceX medical research program

  • Contribute to defining the long-term vision for the research program

  • Develop research experiment procedures, train crew on execution of research, and be responsible for all pre-flight and post-flight research logistics and data collection

  • Support in-flight research activities as specialist on console in Mission Control

  • Work with customers in development of research

  • Collaborate with academic institutions and/or private organizations on medical research projects

  • Responsible for research technical implementation, integrating with operations and engineering teams

  • Contribute to proposals for research funding

  • Contribute to writing or reviewing academic publications

  • Apply for IRB approval and develop informed consent

  • Contribute to medical system design

  • Contribute to the design of human health countermeasures for long duration spaceflight

  • Work with sales team on sourcing new research opportunities

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in science or engineering field

  • Prior experience with human-subject research

  • At least 2 years of experience working in areas related to the health, medical or research aspects of human spaceflight

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • PhD in science or engineering field with experience developing and publishing research

  • Ability to work broadly across various scientific and technical domains

  • Interest in working with interdisciplinary teams to solve complex problems

  • Able to effectively manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously

  • Attention to detail

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as technical writing proficiency

  • Experience with scientific grant writing and experimental protocol design

  • Experience with inferential and descriptive statistics, statistical computing, and data visualization

  • Experience with basic programming or other relevant software/tools such as SQL, and Excel

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some travel (~10%) to other SpaceX sites, specifically Cape Canaveral, FL is expected

  • Position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing
