Vaughn & Melton, a JMT company, is seeking a Structural Engineer to add to their growing Structures Team in Kentucky. The successful candidate will be able to report to our Lexington Office, and will be responsible for structural engineering design using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments with limited supervision. They will also act as a technical advisor to less experienced engineers.
The Structural Project Engineer will be responsible for engineering design of transportation structures including bridge superstructure, substructures, culverts, retaining walls, and sign structures using knowledge of structure engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments with limited supervision. Acts as a technical advisor to less experienced engineers. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the engineering work
Data collection such as performing field structure inspections
Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, aerial photography and other topographical or geologic data to plan project work
Perform and manage the development of design computations
Design projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines, using design software and drawing tools
Develop construction cost estimates and write specifications
Assist in the preparation of engineering documents for advertisement and construction
Prepare and compile contract plans, specifications and estimates
Manage project sub-consultants and in-house support disciplines
Develop extra work order requests and open-end contract task proposals
Prepare qualification-based proposals, as required
Prepare for and attend meetings with clients
Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline, scope, budget, and established quality
Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities
Required Skills
Knowledge of structural design principles for steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete for transportation structures (bridges and retaining walls)
Proficient in Microsoft Office
Proficient in MicroStation and InRoads
Excellent written, organizational and communication skills
Required Experience
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited engineering program
5- 10 years' experience in structural bridge design (additional experience will be considered)
KY Professional Engineer License (Additional Licenses are desirable)
Preferred Qualifications
Working Conditions
Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
