LEAD AUTOMATION & CONTROLS ENGINEER (STARSHIP)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work closely with weld/tooling/build engineers to develop new leading edge automated systems to manufacture Starship; this will include regular interaction with the most senior vehicle engineering management team with very close scrutiny on design methodology in all aspects of project design and implementation
Lead a group of engineers and technicians to complete small and large scale automation system projects
Provide mentorship to engineers and assist with design decisions, project strategies and technical problems
Lead a team that provides round the clock production support and breakdown support on critical assets throughout the SpaceX Boca Chica facility
Provide support for launch ground systems when required
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in engineering or technology
4+ years of professional experience
4+ years of experience with PLC, HMI & SCADA programming
4+ years of electrical schematic CAD experience
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Able to tolerate a high level of ambiguity and independence, implementing design changes rapidly as the facility is as much an R&D facility as it is a production one
Experience managing engineers and technicians on a project basis or through a leadership role
Experience with motion control, robotic programming and/or work cell design
Weld automation experience would be a major advantage (Plasma/Laser/TIG/MIG)
Hands on experience building & commissioning high quality electrical control panels & electro-mechanical systems
Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 79, UL508A codes
Experience with P&ID, hydraulic, pneumatic system design
Experience with Allen Bradley, Beckhoff, or Siemens programming
Programing experience in a common language, VB Script, Javascript, C#, C++ etc.
In depth understanding of common manufacturing processes and machines, including mills & lathes, both manual and CNC
Experience modeling with 3D CAD software (e.g. NX/Unigraphics, Catia, Solidworks)
Capable of solving complex problems with little to no supervision on schedule as an individual or as a member of an integrated team
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
The role is Boca Chica based only and relocation must be taken place within 3 months of accepting the role
Available to work extended hours and weekends when needed based on site operational needs; flexibility required
Occasional travel to other SpaceX or 3rd party facilities, up to 15%
Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg
