MATERIALS ENGINEER, ALLOY DEVELOPMENT

The Starship Materials team provides materials and process support for the design and production of the Starship vehicle. This role will be responsible for generating materials design values and reviewing Human Landing System (HLS) designs for fracture control.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide materials and process support to Starship design and production engineers.

  • Develop design allowables for materials used in Starship designs.

  • Coordinate fatigue and fracture testing including review of data for inclusion in a central materials database.

  • Document adherence to materials requirements for certification of HLS including creation of materials usage agreements.

  • Review design concepts against design requirements related to materials.

  • Conduct and direct hands-on laboratory testing and failure analysis of vehicle hardware.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in materials or mechanical engineering.

  • 2+ years of professional work experience in a materials engineering related role.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's or PhD in materials engineering or materials science.

  • Expert first principle knowledge of mechanical behavior or metals.

  • Experience with fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth rate testing.

  • Experience performing failure analysis for design hardware.

  • Familiarity with standard testing methods for materials and development of design allowables.

  • Understanding of non-destructive test methods for fracture control.

  • Understanding of aerospace metals including nickel based alloys, stainless steel, aluminum alloys, and titanium alloys.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to travel as needed.

  • Willingness to work extended hours when need to meet critical deadlines.
