The American Heart Association's Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

In this role, the intern will provide support to the Regional VP of Communications through the development and implementation of communications and marketing assets that promote the Association's strategic priorities and events, with a special emphasis on traditional and non-traditional media relations within the Mobile, AL market. The internship will provide an opportunity to assist with social media posts and ad buys, developing communications materials and other tools to inform key audiences about heart disease and stroke. The intern will also collaborate with volunteers, leadership, senior management, component staff, news media, outside organizations, and the public for the purpose of enhancing the American Heart Association's public image and managing the flow of communications on traditional and non-traditional platforms with the overall goal of supporting and impacting the strategic fundraising activities of the Association.

Internship Overview

  • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week

  • Internship Duration: 1/16/24-5/3/24

  • Hybrid: Intern must live in the local Mobile, AL or Pensacola, FL region

  • Salary of $23 per hour

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following :

  • Write/distribute communication materials mostly supporting fundraising activations.

  • Pitch/place stories in traditional and non-traditional media, as appropriate.

  • Assist with social media posts and web stories.

  • Secure media participation in support of the American Heart Association's events.

  • Work with internal fundraising staff to determine roles/responsibilities for communications support and provide support, as appropriate.

  • Identifies human interest stories for distribution via media, digital, and social channels.

  • Develop PowerPoints and Communications reports as required.

  • Work to place Public Service Announcements (PSA) locally, as appropriate.

  • Work with other team members to help manage local paid advertising projects.

  • Manage and implement other projects as identified by the Executive Director and Regional VP of Communications.

Qualifications

  • College/University student (or recently graduated) studying communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or another related field.

  • Interest in implementing public relations campaigns, pitching to media, writing and/or developing press releases, scripts, social media posts, and other marketing and communications assets.

  • Ability to work as a team member with multiple internal and external constituencies: staff, media, external corporations, and volunteers.

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of news media operations, newsgathering, and technology.

  • Required Equipment: Reliable Wi-Fi Connection.

  • Ability to travel to local meetings and events as required with reliable transportation.

  • Minimum availability of 20-25 hrs./wk.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
