MATERIALS ENGINEER, SPECIAL PROCESSES & POLYMERS

This is a materials engineering role supporting supply chain engineering on changes, risks, and specification management for polymeric hardware, coatings, and other special processes. Additionally, this role will help drive introduction of SpaceX designed materials and insourcing of manufacturing technology.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage introduction of new materials and processes including qualification at vendors

  • Work strategic new production introductions related to polymers, adhesives, coatings, and surface modifications such as etching and polishing

  • Implement and qualify SpaceX developed processes and polymers at raw material vendors

  • Write and maintain materials procurement specifications

  • Coordinate internal change review of vendor driven materials and special process changes across multiple teams

  • Review vendor designed hardware against materials requirements for design

  • Assist on insourcing of new production technologies to increase rate, improve reliability, or reduce cost

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in materials science or engineering

  • 2+ years of experience working in a materials engineering role

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working in a materials engineering role related to supply chain

  • Master's degree in materials science or engineering with a focus on polymer science, surface engineering, or coating technology

  • Familiarity with industry specifications for polymers, o-rings, anodize, plating, or other finishes

  • Experience working with industry partners on verification of material requirements for adhesives, paints, foams, or custom polymer solutions

  • Experience writing and maintaining material specifications

  • Demonstrated experience with implementing process improvements at vendors

  • Understanding of aerospace materials including implementation of design requirements

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to travel as needed

  • Willingness to work extended hours when need to meet critical deadlines
