Job Summary

Berkshire Hathaway Energy has an exciting Engineering Technical Specialist I/II/III position available and it may be located in any of the following reporting locations: Groveport Compressor Station, Newark Station, Oakford Compressor Station or White Oaks General Office Building. This Engineering Technical Specialist will provide high-level technical maintenance support to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations of gas turbines and centrifugal compressors and equipment.

BHE GT&S is an interstate natural gas transmission and storage company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, that became a standalone subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy in November 2020. We operate more than 5,560 miles of gas transmission line and 756 Bcf of underground storage in the eastern U.S., along with gathering, processing and field services businesses. We operate in 12 states. BHE GT&S is an industry leader in liquefied natural gas solutions, through initiatives such as Pivotal LNG and our 25% operating stake in the Cove Point LNG facility in Lusby, Maryland. The energy we deliver supports major distribution utilities, power plants and manufacturing. Our premier storage operations provide dependable, flexible support for direct customers and neighboring pipelines. At our multiple interconnects - especially the liquid South Point hub - BHE GT&S services support both producers and consumers, ensuring competitive access to abundant energy.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Consult with field personnel and provide guidance concerning maintenance procedures

  • Assess mechanical condition of equipment; recommend corrective action and maintenance/repair procedures

  • Provide technical expertise; serve as an interface between compressor station personnel and vendors/contractors

  • Assess the potential impacts of mechanical problems on equipment efficiency and reliability; recommend maintenance procedures and corrective actions

  • Support Air emissions testing

  • Conduct, coordinate and/or assist with equipment repair or inspections as appropriate

  • Establish predictive and preventative maintenance programs, procedures and schedules

  • Develop and conduct formal and informal training relating to operating and maintenance procedures

  • Identify maintenance trends and conduct impact analysis; develop and recommend cost saving initiatives

  • Stay abreast of technological advances in compressor equipment and turbine analysis equipment; determine potential applications; develop and present recommendations

  • Support pulsation & vibration analysis and recommend corrective actions based upon the collected information

  • Conduct/coordinate failure investigations on compression equipment.

  • Coordinate/manage compression equipment overhaul projects and Turbine exchanges.

  • Develop and manage capital budgets for equipment overhauls

  • Or other duties assigned by leadership

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Minimum Requirements (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications):

Engineering Technical Specialist I:

  • Bachelor's degree with 0-2 years of engine analysis or mechanical experience that is directly related to Natural Gas compressor and engine repair.

  • Associate's degree with 2+ years of engine analysis or mechanical experience that is directly related to Natural Gas compressor and engine repair.

  • High School Degree with 4+ years of engine analysis or mechanical experience that is directly related to Natural Gas compressor and engine repair.

Engineering Technical Specialist II:

  • Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of engine analysis or mechanical experience that is directly related to Natural Gas compressor and engine repair.

  • Associate's degree with 5+ years of engine analysis or mechanical experience that is directly related to Natural Gas compressor and engine repair.

  • High School Degree with 7+ years of engine analysis or mechanical experience that is directly related to Natural Gas compressor and engine repair.

Engineering Technical Specialist III:

  • Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of engine analysis or mechanical experience that is directly related to Natural Gas compressor and engine repair.

  • Associate's degree with 7+ years of engine analysis or mechanical experience that is directly related to Natural Gas compressor and engine repair.

  • High School Degree with 9+ years of engine analysis or mechanical experience that is directly related to Natural Gas compressor and engine repair.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with trouble shooting Solar Turbines and controls, centrifugal compressors and compressor station operation knowledge

  • Strong understanding of instrumentation and controls operation

  • Knowledge of Solar Turbine principals, Turbo Tronic Controls, Gas Compressor Principles, Analytical Trouble Shooting, Gas Turbine Performance and Condition Evaluation

  • Must be a good problem solver / analytical thinker who can systematically work through problems and formulate recommendations for corrective actions

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of logical problem analysis to facilitate the development of solutions and options to resolve problems

  • Ability to perform effectively in a high-pace, multitask environment

  • Ability to manage and supervise projects and make independent decisions

  • Ability to communicate effectively and develop rapport with internal and external customers

  • Experience with operations, maintenance, and repair procedures on gas turbines and centrifugal compressors.

  • Experience with operation, maintenance and repair of associated auxiliary equipment within a compressor station

  • Strong understanding of instrumentation and controls operation

  • Demonstrated proficient experience operating a personal computer and mobile devices

Bachelor degree

In order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or

  • 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline; or

  • 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or

  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree
