Duties and Responsibilities - Prepares and cooks a wide variety of foods requiring simple cooking tasks such as grilling chops, steaks, poultry and fish; watches items while they are cooking, turns as required, and removes same when considered done; also, performs a combination of several of the following cooking tasks: opens and heats canned vegetables or fruits; grills pancakes, bacon and eggs to order; measures and weighs portions and ingredients as required by recipe; cooks cereal; prepares beverages, toast, salads, gelatin and sandwiches. Prevents waste and insures economical use of supplies, kitchen equipment and food stuff. - Keeps refrigerators, grills, equipment and working area clean in accordance with sanitation requirements. Adheres to all sanitary codes and safety requirements and regulations. - May be required to perform several food related tasks such as assisting in the serving of food at the steam table during "peak" periods, as well as assisting in the requisitioning and receiving of food-stuffs and merchandise. - Adheres to Navy Exchange Customer Service standards by maintaining a neat, clean appearance and wearing appropriate uniform/name tag, as required. Exercises tact, good manners and courtesy when serving and assisting customers; suggests substitutes when items are not available; and informs customers of specials. Provides service in a prompt and friendly manner; ensuring that the food items are presented in an attractive and appetizing way. Furnishes each customer with a register receipt and thanks the customer for their patronage. - Performs duties under the general supervision of a designated supervisor. Follows oral and written instructions, i.e., cook's worksheet, menus and schedules. Carries out cooking assignments with limited instruction and without close review. More difficult and complex cooking assignments are performed under close supervision; when learning new or complex food recipes, receives detailed instruction as to cooking methods and use of equipment with review during progress and upon completion. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work involves frequent lifting or moving of objects weighing up to 30 pounds (e.g., utensils or containers of food); constant standing and walking; and occasional lifting of over 50 pounds (e.g., pans of meat). WORKING CONDITIONS: Often works in uncomfortably warm and noisy kitchen areas and is exposed to steam, fumes and odors from cooking. Danger exists of falling on floors that have been freshly mopped or where food has been spilled; burns from steam or hot foods; and cuts from knives and electrical machines. Is exposed to extremes in temperatures when entering walk-in refrigerators from the warm kitchen. - Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: GENERAL EXPERIENCE One year of experience that provided the applicant knowledge and skill to carry out basic food preparation and cooking. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE One year of high school education may be substituted for 3 months of general experience up to a High School Diploma or GED for one year of general experience. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE One year of experience that provided the applicant with knowledge and skill in food preparation and cooking including simple cooking tasks such as grilling measuring and weighing portions and ingredients as required by recipes keeping refrigerators grills and other food preparation equipment clean in accordance with sanitation requirements etc . PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work involves frequent lifting or moving of objects weighing up to 30 pounds e.g. utensils or containers of food constant standing and walking and occasional lifting of over 50 pounds e.g. pans of meat.
