SR. MECHANICAL ENGINEER (STARLINK)
SpaceX's Starlink mechanical engineering team designs the most advanced satellite technology in orbit today including space lasers connecting the constellation, antennas that broadcast the internet to thousands of people, mechanisms, solar arrays, thrusters, deployment systems, and the satellite structure itself. Mechanical engineers on Starlink will collaborate across engineering disciplines to help solve a broad set of problems. The ideal candidate excels at working in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Own hardware from conceptual design through high volume production for the Starlink constellation, including electromechanical, RF, and optical systems, mechanisms, and primary/secondary structure
Rapidly iterate in design space to inform high level systems trades and steer overall product direction
Develop design criteria, collaborate on requirements, and drive system-level optimization; build math and analysis models to verify product will meet functional targets
Drive holistic DFM to create elegant designs with a focus on piece part and process count reductions, error proofing at every step of fabrication and integration, and consistent performance and production metrics
Establish an efficient product lifecycle starting in the supply chain all the way through final integration that balances cost, complexity, and quality; work closely with partner teams to design and realize an efficient in-house production line
Perform environmental and performance testing on hardware to validate analysis and demonstrate compliance to design criteria
Lead multidisciplinary root cause investigations and component redesigns to improve reliability and production rate
Demonstrate extreme ownership of product outcomes at every stage of development and production
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, aerospace engineering, physics or other engineering discipline
5+ years of engineering design experience
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Prior ownership of a complex component or assembly from initial design through high-volume production ramp
Hands-on experience with mechanism design, prototyping, and precision mechanical assembly
Experience working with PCB designers and exposure to PCB layout and PCBA mechanical design
Demonstrated understanding of structural analysis and failure modes of mechanical systems
Knowledge of and experience in selecting materials, manufacturing methods, and surface treatments for mechanical components
Proficiency with GD&T and tolerance analysis for multi-component assemblies
Proficiency in one or more programming languages
Self-motivated, strong multi-tasking, organizational, communication, and documentation skills
Experience working effectively across multi-disciplinary teams
Ability to assess risk and make design and development decisions without all available data
Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary
Some travel required
