Position summary: Senior Archaeologist/Principal Investigator. Responsible for project management, scheduling, managing, and conducting Phase I-III fieldwork and research associated with archaeological projects as well as managing archaeologists, field directors, and technicians. Responsible for writing all, or portions of, archaeological reports. Assists with proposals and client marketing. The qualified candidate for this position will manage Phase I-III field work in Virginia and surrounding states. Serves as the cultural resources lead for Virginia for JMT. Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Conducts archaeological field work to locate and identify artifacts
Collects data and field samples during archaeological investigations
Analyzes historic and pre-historic artifacts
Documents methodologies and findings of research and archaeological investigations
Schedules work and creates team assignments for field crews
Instructs field crews on how to use equipment, technology and field methods
Reviews and writes archaeological reports and/or prepares archaeological site forms
Assists in making decisions about project alternatives and the resolution of adverse effects to archaeological resources
Works with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet JMT and professional quality standards
Oversees Archaeologists' and Field Technicians' work in archaeological investigations
Monitors schedules, budgets and manpower requirements
Hires, trains, develops, mentors, and conducts performance reviews for staff
Leads preparation of scopes of work, fee proposals, and responses to RFP's, including teaming arrangements and attending and presenting at project/contract interviews
Participates in preparation of public involvement materials and attends public meetings
Participates in and assists Section Heads and Office Managers with strategic planning and Business Development efforts, including leading initiatives

Required Skills
Strong written and oral communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word and Excel
Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, ArcMap and/or other GIS programs
Required Experience
Master's Degree from an accredited school in archaeology
Must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Qualification Standards for Archaeologists
8+ years of experience
Regional (Virginia/North Carolina/Maryland) experience in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology
Demonstrated skills and supervisory experience in Phase I-III fieldwork
Must be able to provide a writing sample from either a thesis, dissertation, or archaeological report
Must possess a valid driver's license
Registered Professional Archaeologist
Experience with Federal Agencies and Tribal Nations
Working Conditions
Work is performed in the field 25% of the time and requires the ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs as needed. Field work will require walking and carrying field equipment over typical outdoor terrain. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Out-of-town travel is expected, requiring driving and/or flying to project locations.
Office work is performed within a general office environment 75% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Office work is performed with adequate lighting and temperature, with no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc.
