Job Description

Data Analyst (Swarm) at SpaceX

Mountain View, CA, United States

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

DATA ANALYST (SWARM)

Swarm is enabling global connectivity with the world's most affordable satellite network. Our mission is to connect people and devices from anywhere in the world at the lowest cost.

Swarm has developed the world's smallest two-way communication satellites. Through our constellation we provide low-bandwidth, low-cost connectivity to return data from anywhere on Earth, focusing on regions without cell or WiFi coverage. Our unique economics make Swarm's network, ground hardware, and web platform accessible at the industry's lowest costs to deliver maximum value to customers. Swarm provides IoT tracking and data return services for industrial/sensor networks, particularly those in the maritime shipping, agriculture, energy, and ground transportation industries.

As a Data Analyst on the Swarm team, you will be responsible for operating the growing Swarm satellite network as it scales globally. You will manage the condition, changes and maintenance required to improve and sustain service while responding to real-time anomalies - mitigating their impact before any significant service degradation occurs. You will collaborate closely across engineering teams to develop alerts, mitigations, and upgrades to orbital and ground-based assets. Through continuous improvement, you will drive process and automation upgrades to minimize the need for manual intervention.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead projects to measure and improve the performance of the Swarm network

  • Detect and triage emerging anomalies on all satellites and ground stations

  • Collaborate across engineering teams to create highly operable and maintainable infrastructure

  • Actively troubleshoot network issues and recommend, or perform mitigation strategies including specific satellite command and control

  • Maintain and update system wide configurations, performing satellite OTA updates as new features are deployed

  • Create documentation and procedures for internal network management

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or science discipline or 2+ years of professional data analytics experience

  • Development and/or scripting experience in Python, SQL, R or other programming languages

  • Experience creating documentation and procedures

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 2+ years of professional or experience operating or supporting networks

  • Experience in mission-critical operations where attention to detail is required to ensure success

  • Experience debugging complex systems with data analysis

  • Experience with satellite communications networks

  • Familiarity with satellite orbital dynamics

  • Experience working with Raspberry Pi hardware

  • Experience setting up and troubleshooting VPN and connectivity issues

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends if needed

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:

  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
