LAUNCH BROADCAST ENGINEER

The Launch Communications group supports launch site operations with operational voice, mission-critical video, vehicle and payload interface RF systems, site communications infrastructure, and real-time operations. Engineers and specialists on our communications team provide system design and development, critical performance evaluation, customer interface systems, and upgrades that enable reliable, safe, and successful launch site and spacecraft support.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, construct, and maintain:

  • Operational voice (wired and wireless) intercom systems

  • Site-wide Motorola two-way radio systems

  • Video cameras, video distribution systems, and video control applications

  • High speed imaging systems

  • Timing systems (GPS timing receivers, IRIG-B and CS-5 count distribution)

  • Public address systems

  • RF antennas, systems and ground stations

  • Perform trade studies to define communication system requirements and optimizations

  • Assist with proposals and specification development related to launch site production and launch vehicle-to-ground communication systems

  • Assist with the design and development of site wide layer 1 infrastructure projects

  • Provide support in the assessment, specification development and testing of radio frequency systems

  • Work in the field, performing hands-on designing and troubleshooting

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or other engineering discipline

  • Experience with IP and HD-SDI video cameras and infrastructure

  • Experience with wired and wireless voice intercom communication systems

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 3+ years of professional experience with communications systems, controls, and/or RF

  • Ability to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment including daily interactions with technicians, engineers, and managers

  • Ability to prioritize multiple competing projects effectively and incorporate new design requirements and scope changes quickly

  • Demonstrated excellence in leadership, communications, and briefing skills, with an ability to interface with key stakeholders

  • Experience with communications systems, controls, and/or RF

  • Experience designing, implementing and testing system-level communication architectures

  • Ability to perform field work, able to work with hands, and have real-world knowledge of working with tools and test equipment

  • Experience performing RF link and RF interference analysis for launch vehicle, satellite, or similar hardware systems

  • Experience in the installation and operation of RF communication systems

  • Knowledge of C++, Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, and Linux

  • Experience with serial data communications systems including acquisition, storage, processing, transport and display -- including TCP/IP, EIA 530, and PCM/FM

  • Experience with configuration and operation of TCP/IP based communication equipment

  • Basic familiarity with electronics labs and environments

  • Familiarity with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and licensing

  • Knowledge of industry standards (BICSI, NEC, TIA/EIA); different types of fiber (MM, SM) for interior and exterior usage; Cat5E, Cat6 and Cat6A data cabling; and cable pathways such as conduit, fire penetrations and cable trays

  • Knowledge of the telecom network best practices and concepts including network security, network architecture design, technical standards and deliverables, troubleshooting tools (e.g., line analyzers, breakout boxes, and network traces), software and hardware installation and configuration, network hardware, and protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, DLC, and ASYNC)

  • Ability to run with a project from early design stage to implementation and testing

  • Self-motivated and directed with keen attention to detail

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg

  • Must be willing to travel (approximately 20%) to other launch sites as necessary

  • Must be willing to work long hours and weekends when necessary to support launch and critical project timelines, flexibility required

  • Lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position
