Job Summary
Performs and/or reviews engineering calculations, analysis, research and design. Provides cost analysis as needed and develops recommendation based on calculations (e.g. cost for equipment upgrade) for management review. Under direction of supervisor or work leader, exercises independence in evaluating, selecting, and applying standard or well-defined engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. Uses independent judgment in prioritizing and making moderately complex adaptations and modifications. Assignments have clear and specified objectives and require investigation of a limited number of variables.
Engineer I: Entry or developmental level position providing engineering support in designated company area, or specific engineering discipline. Perform engineering calculations, analysis, research and design. Under direction of supervisor or work leader, performs routine assignments designed to develop professional engineering work knowledge, gain familiarity with techniques, approaches, practices and the nature of engineering systems, equipment, etc. and to develop the ability to apply fundamental engineering principles and techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out sequence of related engineering tasks.
Engineer II: Second level position in the engineering series provides engineering support in designated company area, or specific engineering discipline. Fully competent role.
Engineer III: This role is the top progression level position in the engineer series. Includes senior to technical expert engineers, able to perform difficult and complex work requiring thorough knowledge of the subject matter and significant experience within functional assignment area.

An Engineer in Substation and Transmission Line Civil Engineering Standards would be expected to:
Design lines and substation structures, to include preparation of steel performance drawings, fabrication drawings.
Support roadway design requirements and review of 3rd party designs for access to substations and line right-of-way.
Develop specifications and calculations for line design and substation design groups to use when completing detail design of substations.
Develop specifications for oil-containment systems and substation buildings with vaults.
Support the structural aspect to electrical connections, and forces applied to use of conductors (wire, pipe conductors) using aluminum and stain-less steel hardware.
Work closely with project civil engineers and designers to coordinate the design/site customization of structural elements within an overall substation design.
Represent global steel fabrication requirements and approved steel suppliers.
Lead substation building expansion requirements and new building specification requirements gathering.
Develop, support, and help maintain substation technical specifications. Sample specifications include: substation concrete specifications, substation steel specifications, substation fence specifications, substation oil containment specifications and substation welding (aluminum and steel) specifications.
Establish an industry presence in substation specific committees and working groups. For example, participate in IEEE Std. 605 (Air-insulated bus design) and ASCE 113 (substation structure design standards) working groups.
Support the structural component of engineer-procure-construct (EPC) evolutions within substation projects. For example, projects that relate to the turn-key installation of Gas-Insulated Substations (GIS), Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices, switchgear, fences, walls and helical pier foundation systems.
Perform structural reviews and written evaluations of existing foundations and steel structures during emergency equipment replacement evolutions (including foundation assessments for large power transformers, circuit breakers, capacitor banks, etc.,) with an emergency spare.
Provide normal and emergency (real-time) support for operation and construction evolutions. For example, travel path assessment for bringing a replacement transformer into an existing substation.
Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences required for entry into this job include the following:
Engineer I: 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience
Engineer II: 3+ years of relevant engineering experience
Engineer III: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
(Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)
Experience using MicroStation is a plus.
Experience using Autodesk Civil 3D is a plus.
Experience with Math Cad is a plus.
Experience with Finite Element Analysis is a plus.
Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals;
Requires developmental experience in a professional engineering position;
Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives;
Understands and can apply knowledge of configuration management;
Ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.);
Planning, organizational and project management skills;
Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills;
Effective decision making skills;
Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing);
Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems;
Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices;
Equally effective working independently or in a team environment;
Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technologyand a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
Education Requirements
Required Education: Bachelor or higher degree in engineering (see required engineering criteria above)
Preferred Engineering Disciplines: B.S. in Civil Engineering (BSCE)
Desired Qualifications: Registered Professional Engineer OR Certified Engineer-In-Training is preferred.
