The American Heart Association's Health Care Business Solutions department has an opportunity for a Community Health Intern focused on community CPR. Healthcare Business Solutions (HBS) is AHA's department for resuscitation science, education, and training, and publisher of the official Guidelines for CPR and ECC. HBS trains millions of people globally every year by educating healthcare providers, caregivers, and the public on how to respond to cardiac arrest and first aid emergencies.

To double the survival rate and increase by-stander response rates, AHA is dedicated significantly increase access to sustainable CPR training for schools, communities, coaches, athletes, sports league officials, youth sports leagues, NICU families, faith-based organizations, businesses and employees.

NICU babies are often at higher risk of cardiac arrest after discharge. The Community CPR Intern will support work on identifying needs for CPR and choking training for hospitals with neonatal intensive care units (NICU).

The American Heart Association's Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

Internship Overview:

Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week

Internship Duration:1/21/25 - 5/2/25

Location: Remote

Salary: $23.00 per hour

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

Reporting to the National Senior Development Consultant, our intern will research NICU departments to better understand how new parents are being prepared to save a life prior to discharge from the hospital. The intern will summarize research that will provide insight into strategies to increase access to CPR training for new parents.

Research and Analysis

  • Using various internal and external resources, research NICU hospitals in the assigned region. Identify appropriate points of contact in the NICU department. In partnership with regional Community CPR managers, build necessary tools to capture profile information.

  • Contribute to the development and/or the refinement of assessment tools necessary to capture needs and appropriate data. Manage information captured in a well-organized, easy-to-access data file.

  • Follow protocols established by Data Quality and Reporting Manager.

Project Management

  • Collaborate with team members to prioritize NICU hospitals based on their alignment AHA.

  • Provide summary of research. Assist in the identification of trends and provide input on strategies needed to increase access to CPR training for new parents, their families and friends.

  • Prepare weekly and monthly work plan on best approach to reach out to NICU Discharge Nurses, NICU Directors and other appropriate contacts within the NICU department.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records on research findings.

Support Fundraising Strategies

  • Provide research-driven insights to inform fundraising strategies and engagement plans for prospects.

  • Participate in meetings to discuss research findings and contribute to strategic discussions.

Confidentiality and Ethics

  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion and professionalism.

  • Adhere to ethical guidelines and data privacy regulations when conducting research and handling donor information.

Qualifications

  • Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in public health or related degree are encouraged to apply.

  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.

  • Strong analytical skills, comfortable with qualitative and quantitative data.

  • Problem-solving and critical thinking.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to create a strategy based on data.

  • Ability to work independently and professionally in a corporate environment and assume responsibility for completing projects from inception through final results.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.

  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

  • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection.

  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
