LAUNCH COMMUNICATIONS INFRASTRUCTURE SPECIALIST
SpaceX employees work in a complex environment supporting a variety of critical launch and landing site and ground support systems. The launch communications team installs and supports the infrastructure used for all types of telecommunications in support of our launch vehicles and spacecraft, including the layer 1 fiber and copper data network cabling infrastructure, operational voice (both wired and wireless systems), mission video, ground-side vehicle and payload interface RF systems, ground stations, telemetry and optical tracking systems, marine communications, readiness testing, and other systems involved in real-time communications and operations for Falcon, Dragon, and other missions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop conceptual designs and specifications based on SpaceX corporate and mission requirements
Prepare detailed design drawing and documents for a project including entrance facilities; vertical and horizontal backbone pathways; vertical and horizontal backbone cables; horizontal pathways; horizontal cables; work area outlets; equipment rooms; telecommunications closets; cross-connect facilities; transition points; consolidation points, shafts, conduits, raceways, and floor penetrations (such as sleeves or slots) that provide routing space for the cables
Prioritize and schedule work and tech teams to meet required timelines
Coordinate with other contractors and project teams as needed
Interface with external carriers (private and government) to define interfaces at cross-connect facilities, and transition points
Provide QA and auditing before and after infrastructure cabling plant work
Create metrics and procedure documents
Manage the integrity of the documentation of all installations including assets, locations, connectivity, and maintenance of the patch record databases
Initiate installation standards and conducts on the job training sessions as needed
Assist in the development of cable installation, termination, and testing best practices across SpaceX as well as quality assurance inspection criteria
Responsible for scheduling installation program training and other manufacturer training
Inform and keep all personnel up to date on TIA/EIA and other passive cable industry standards
Provide purchase order creation and financial controls for infrastructure cabling related activities ensuring adherence to budget and timelines
Drive capacity planning as needed to assure adequate circuits as well as site maintenance and upgrades/changes to existing systems
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalency certificate
5+ years of professional experience in a hands-on role working with at least one of the following: structured cabling, cable plant design, structured cabling, fiber, twisted pair copper, coaxial copper
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
1+ years of leadership experience, either leading people or projects
Previous professional experience using Visio or other CAD software to develop system documentation
Ability to translate client requirements into technical specifications
Professional experience with troubleshooting of modern systems and network platform and what is necessary for physical layer inter-connectivity
Working knowledge of electrical systems including UPS and standby power systems
Experience directing data center technicians
Proficiency with fiber splicing
Experience in RF communication cabling
Experience in IP and HD-SDI video cabling infrastructure
Experience using: Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power point
Professional experience working with leadership to perform strategy planning
Experience managing support vendors and contractors
General comprehension of the various components and sub-components of data center infrastructure
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg
Ability to distinguish between different colors, and possess manual dexterity to complete fine-motor tasks
Ability to travel as required to common destinations including Hawthorne, CA (SpaceX Headquarters); McGregor, TX (SpaceX Test Site); and Vandenberg, CA (SpaceX West Coast Launch Site)
50-hour work weeks are typical, schedule varies depending on site operational needs, flexibility required
