Engineers in AWS work to design resilient, cost effective Colo DC facilities. We are responsible for achieving an excellent uptime (availability) for our customers and drive to develop a fleet of buildings emphasizing security, safety, and efficiency, while finding new ways to meet AWS's growing demand. We justify and communicate the technical decisions we make directly to AWS leadership and work hard to drive continuous advancements in our designs and operating parameters.

AWS Colo Availability Engineers are responsible for consultative and peer review of the design of all design disciplines within Amazon Colo DCs worldwide. Beyond design focus, the Availability Engineers work directly with stakeholder teams to implement processes and procedures, that are functional, practical and innovative with a primary focus on improvement of system availability.

As a Senior Engineer, you will be part of a highly creative and effective leadership team. Our leaders are tasked with developing regional strategies for Colo capacity delivery and challenging the design, construction, test, and operational status quo.

You will be responsible for the delivery of projects, applying quality controls, and providing technical guidance to team members. As a subject matter expert, you will be responsible for the availability of prototypical DC facilities, localization of conceptual innovations, solve large-scale implementation and capacity issues, and build strong relationships with the regional industry.

Anticipated travel not to exceed 25%

The Senior Colo Regional Availability Engineer will be responsible for the following:

. Auditing and peer reviewing DC Infrastructure Engineering designs

. Develop strategic solutions which meet or exceed our quality requirements and fall within our budgetary and redundancy requirements

. Conceives, initiates, and leads projects with widespread impact on infrastructure design, innovation, and implementation

. Sets the standard for customer serving coordination and repeatable processes as they relate to engineering, test, construction, commissioning, operations, and best practices. Drives process improvements across the organizations to drive increase in availability to meet customer expectation

. Decompose complex problems into straightforward and actionable solutions

. Be a leader within the group as well as within internal and external teams that support our data centers

. Provide technical oversight of the Regional Electrical and Mechanical Basis of Design (BOD), Construction Documentation, SoWs, procurement initiatives, supplier management, commissioning scripts, operation and maintenance manuals and procedures, and all relevant products and processes that drive and impact availability

. Serve as a technical advisor for AWS datacentre electrical, mechanical, structural, site, civil, security, network, fire detection and suppression and all design disciplines as they relate to and drive increased availability

. Work with local agencies having jurisdiction and certification agencies to ensure compliance with federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes

. Mentor, guide, and technically lead CRE engineers globally in your discipline

. Develop and maintain technical guidelines/guardrails/mechanisms that raise the bar.

. Review and technical inspect designs for new colo data centers and lead discussions for the corrective actions for the colo to meet our design standards

. Review and technical inspect Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and lead discussions for the corrective actions related to site/equipment failures

. Directly support operational issue escalations including some on-call event support.

. Interface with internal engineering partner teams such as the Colo Design Standards team, the server hardware team, and other colo Principal Engineers to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability in services delivered

. Be the steward of field feedback to our upstream Colo Designs Standards team, and downstream feedback from the principal community back to CRE

. Work on concurrent programs across multiple geographical regions and support our engineering audit and remediation programs

. Be the decision maker in complex technical discussions

- Serve as a technical advisor for AWS datacenter electrical, mechanical, structural, site, civil, security, network, fire detection and suppression and all design disciplines as they relate to and drive increased availability.

- Work with internal teams to understand user requirements.

- Work with local agencies having jurisdiction and certification agencies to ensure compliance with federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes.

- Directly support operational issues including critical event support.

Basic Qualifications

- . Bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering

. Cumulative 10+ years of experience with mission critical facilities

. Hands-on mission critical equipment/system design, implementation, and operational experience

. Cumulative 3+ years leading cross-functional teams working on mission critical facilities

. Cross discipline senior engineering level of understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, and automatic/static transfer switches, chillers, cooling towers, direct and indirect evaporative cooing, and variable speed drives, and fan systems

. Knowledge of building codes and regulations

. Direct experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of data centers

. Ability to research new designs, technologies, construction methods, and innovative operations procedures of data center equipment and facilities

. Ability to critically audit and provide customer-representative feedback on design concepts through exploration, development, deployment/construction, and through operations

. Ability and willingness to think outside of the box to find creative and innovative solutions to improve availability through improved quality, reliability, and maintainability.

. Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions and present the justification to management in a high-level review.

. Possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, maintain high quality standards.

Preferred Qualifications

. 10+ years of experience directly related to data center or mission critical facility design, construction, and operations.

. Professional Engineering License or Master Degree in Engineering

. Direct experience with high voltage distribution systems design.

. Direct experience with chiller systems, cooling towers and factory testing protocols

. Managing experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of data centers.

. Previous consultant and jurisdiction negotiation skills associated with design, construction and project execution.

. Experience with large-scale technical operations or large-scale compute facilities.
