Position Summary We are seeking a dynamic, innovative, and quality-oriented Fire Protection Engineer with a minimum of 10+ years of experience who is interested in taking a leadership role within our Fire Protection engineering group. The successful candidate will be comfortable consulting to internal and external clients, including Federal/DOD, commercial air carrier airports, and transit systems. The Fire Protection Engineer will demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with a high-level ability to manage multiple projects at one time. As this is a growth area within our organization, the leadership within JMT is committed to assisting with both business development and expansion of the group as well as providing the team leader with the support necessary to enhance their marketing tools, skills, and capabilities.
Prime technical skills will include, but not limited to: building and fire code analysis with specific expertise in the federal Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC); fire resistant construction assessment and analysis; smoke control analysis; general fire protection, life safety concepts and research, automatic suppression system design; fire detection, alarm and communication system design. Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Managing day-to-day contacts with internal and external clients utilizing experience and technology to meet expectations
Performing research and document for internal and external distribution
Performing field condition assessment and engineering analysis of existing fire protection systems, as well as system inspections.
Willingness to travel on occasion, if required.
Designing new fire protection systems including suppression systems, fire detection, alarm and mass notification systems
Performing computer based hydraulic calculations
Performing building and fire code analysis and interpretation
Preparation of life safety plans and code summaries
Performing computer-based fire modeling and familiarity with performance-based design
Writing smoke control rational analyses
Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope
Prepare and compile contract plans, specifications, and estimates
Manage project sub-consultants and in-house support disciplines
Develop extra work order requests and open-end contract task proposals
Prepare proposals as required
Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality
Attend and participate in local and national trade organizations, such as SFPE and NFPA
Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities
Required Skills
Possess experience working with Building Code Officials, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and Fire Marshals to coordinate unique and complex project requirements.
Possess computer skills necessary for daily activities, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, simple graphics, fire dynamic simulation, and a working knowledge of computer aided drafting
Possess project management skills for managing internal projects as well as external client needs
Effectively communicate, both written and verbal, including oral presentations
Experience with current version of AutoCAD, Revit, and Bluebeam software
U.S. Citizen with active security clearance or the ability to obtain a security clearance.
Required Experience
Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in fire protection engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university
Consulting experience with fire protection for DOD/Federal agencies with experience in Aviation and Transit a plus.
Professional Engineering (PE) license in fire protection engineering
Minimum of ten years of experience in the fire protection profession; Equivalent combination of experience and education considered
Working Conditions
Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
