Job Description:

The Hub Manager is responsible for managing sort and load activities. He/She is accountable for ensuring packages are sorted accurately and loaded onto appropriate trailers for movement to next location. This position manages full-time and part-time Hub Supervisors.

The Hub Manager collaborates with Hub and Feeder management (e.g., Feeder Schedulers, Feeder Managers, etc.) to plan weekly special sort activities. He/She holds team accountable to execute agreed plans of safety, service, and production standards. This position collaborates with Feeder and Dispatch operations to ensure loads for large business customers are sorted and built according to service agreements. The Hub Manager facilitates Hub pre-sort meetings to communicate Feeder, Dispatch, and other needs to Hub employees. He/She reviews daily operational reports to manage productivity and performance.

Other Duties

  • Manages resources and people processes (e.g., Quality Performance Review [QPR], Career Development, Training, Staffing, etc.) to ensure the day-to-day administration of processes and formal procedures.

  • Monitors results (e.g., safety tests, observations, etc.) to ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and UPS's Safe Work Methods.

  • Reviews training documentation to ensure compliance with UPS and regulatory training requirements.

  • Communicates cross-functionally (e.g., Plant Engineering, Human Resources, etc.) to ensure equipment is in good condition, packages are sorted properly, and staffing is adequate.

  • Ensures that direct and indirect reports have documented career goals and detailed plans for achieving these goals to develop them personally and professionally.

  • Meets with union representatives to improve employee relations and minimize the number of grievances.

  • Meets with division management to review priorities.

  • Ground Transportation Knowledge: Demonstrates a detailed understanding of processes, procedures and methods for ground transportation operations, including outside carriers and outsourced networks; demonstrates a broad knowledge of tools, equipment and technology used in ground transportation operations; identifies root causes of recurring issues within ground transportation.

  • Hub Operations Knowledge: Demonstrates a detailed understanding of processes, procedures and methods for hub operations; demonstrates a broad knowledge of tools, equipment and technology used in hub operations; identifies root causes of recurring issues within hub operations; describes the general structure of hub operations.

  • Labor Relations Knowledge: Demonstrates an understanding of labor contract provisions; identifies typical root causes of employee issues; resolves routine labor issues; recommends changes that enhance labor relations.

  • Meeting Facilitation: Applies knowledge of creative facilitation techniques to encourage participation; encourages open communication and achieves consensus when necessary; keeps participants engaged and on topic; identifies team conflicts and is able to provide feedback.

  • Legal, Regulatory, and Compliance Knowledge: Demonstrates a basic understanding of the functions, regulations, and procedures of compliance agencies or governing bodies; takes a leadership position in programs that reduce risk and enhance safety.

  • Budget Management: Tracks expenditures against financial targets; describes impact of area's budget on organizational financial plan.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or internationally comparable degree - Preferred
