BUILD ENGINEER, LAUNCH (STARSHIP)
This role is responsible for supporting the build and integration of launch systems for Starship and Super Heavy - our high performance, next generation vehicles that will get us to Mars. This role will flex heavily across design and manufacturing-including participating in design reviews for mechanical and launch systems, managing engineering drawings and work instruction from the launch mechanical team, and driving both system architectures and the physical builds.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Actively participate in the design, fabrication and installation of tools and ground support equipment that help manufacture and launch current and future rockets
Work with the design engineering teams to drive simplicity and reliability into the launch system builds at a complex level, with high coordination with other disciplines from vehicle, civil, fluids, and controls teams
Provide expertise with respect to cost and complexity reduction during design phase and manage fabrication of critical tools
Interpret technical drawings and documents with regards to manufacturing and fabrication processes to create accurate manufacturing planning
Validate and ensure planning documents are maintained throughout the manufacturing cycle
Coordinate with manufacturing team, internally and externally, for changes on manufacturing sequences and update planning accordingly
Develop manufacturing processes, techniques, and tools to enable efficient and high rate manufacturing
Source, retain, and advise new and experienced vendors from a technical perspective
Creatively work projects based on company priorities to meet and exceed aggressive need dates
Create and maintain build schedules
Travel, as required, to domestic SpaceX sites as well as vendors to support fabrication and installation of assigned projects
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in engineering or technical discipline
Hands-on project experience with mechanical systems
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience with the build, assembly, and integration of large mechanical assemblies.
Skilled in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, parts lists, and specifications
Familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
Experience in building structural weldments per AWS D1.1
Experience with large steel structure construction (civil, naval, or mechanical)
Experience authoring technical documentation: inspection plans, operational procedures, test plans
Experience with Unigraphics NX and Teamcenter CAD and PLM systems
Experience with project management of large-scale build projects including estimating, cost control, schedule, and contractor management
Strong analytical, computer, and written skills
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Significant and extended travel to Cape Canaveral, FL may be required depend on business need
Ability to pass Space Force background check for Cape Canaveral
Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions in small openings and climbing hand over hand
Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments - heat, cold, rain
Schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility required with ability to work long hours and weekends
