Job Summary

Engineer I, in Distribution Grid Resiliency, is part of a modeling and analysis team. The individual will provide technical support for several programs that fall under the company's Grid Transformation Plan. The Engineer will perform system studies, analyses, and modeling in order to develop project proposals that support efforts to improve grid reliability and resiliency. The candidate should have strong electrical engineering background; preferably in electric power systems. Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with a strong electric power background. The candidate should possess strong knowledge of engineering principles and practices that will enable the successful candidate to progress in an engineering career series.

Job Activities

Developmental Level-entry level in a job series.

- Performs assignments designed to develop work knowledge, skills and abilities requiring application of policies, procedures, techniques and other criteria in carrying out all aspects of the job

- Performs routine work assignments but over time will demonstrate the ability to perform more difficult work assignments

- Works under established policies and procedures to meet set schedules and system or program requirements

- Continues to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to reach a higher level of proficiency and work complexity

- May receive instructions and guidance on unusual or complex problems and knows when to get others involved

- Utilizes the proper resources to develop solutions in work assignments

- Maintain and manage data for distribution grid load and DER forecasting

- Power system modeling: load flow and voltage analysis, predictive reliability analysis, and time series simulations

- Analyze multiple infrastructure interdependencies related to thermal, voltage and reliability criteria

- Perform/support evaluation, design, engineering, and support activities related to traditional utility solutions and non-wires alternatives

- Participate in trade and industry organizations and benchmarking activities

This position is located in Richmond, VA with a hybrid schedule as an option subject to business needs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences required for entry into this job include the following:

0-2+ years of engineering experience

- Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory

- Ability to analyze all aspects of three-phase AC power flow

- Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)

- Effective decision making skills

- Computer skills and application of software programs

- Analytical and abstract thinking skills

- Problem solving skills

- Ability to learn to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems

- Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices

- Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills

- Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks

- Ability to work within a team environment

- Knowledge of substation equipment/operations, relay operations, and power station preferred

- Exposure to power system modeling software: Synergi Electric, CYME, PSS/E, PSCAD, ASPEN, MATLAB, Open DSS preferred

- Demonstrated resourcefulness in developing system models from diverse and indirect data and information sources preferred

- Programming skills for automation of system studies preferred (e.g., Python, C#, SQL, Visual Basic, etc.) preferred

A partial year of experience of 6 months or more will be rounded to one year of experience.

Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined above.

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or

Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technologyand a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Education Requirements

Education Level: Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering required (Power Systems concentration/focus preferred)

Post graduate engineering degree preferred.

We will accept upcoming graduates until May 2023.
