Job Summary

This position will be filled at the Gas Operations Representative I level.

Gas Operations Representative I

Responsibilities:

  • Responds to all emergency calls such as gas leaks, gas related fire calls, evacuations, asphyxiation and broken gas lines.

  • Assists in construction, maintenance, street repair, installing new gas lines and performing plastic pipe fusion including electro-fusion on IHP services and mains (possibility of working in gaseous atmosphere in a fire suit).

  • Maintains and repairs meter sets, prepares service agreements, collects money, determines service line and meter locations.

  • Completes job related paperwork, records changes to distribution piping system, including all records to verify material and footage for contractor payment and completes Blue Stake location requests when necessary.

  • Completes turn-on and turn-off orders for gas customers.

  • Adjusts new and existing appliances.

  • Completes service orders on all types of appliances.

  • Investigates high bill complaints.

  • Operates required operations department equipment, including but not limited to backhoe, ten wheel dump truck, service truck, crew truck and mini dump truck.

  • Installs new meter sets, both on single sets and on multi meter headers

  • Installs large meters and rotary meter sets.

  • Installs, maintains, and inspects meter protection and snow shelters.

  • May require digging out meters in heavy snow fall areas.

  • May provide field and classroom training for Gas Operations employees, related to knowledge and skills essential to enable Operations employees to serve natural gas customers.

  • May need to possess, or acquire within a reasonable amount of time, a commercial driver's license depending on specific job duties.

  • May be required to obtain and maintain medical clearance to operate DOT-regulated vehicle depending on specific job duties.

  • May be required to obtain and maintain medical clearance to wear a respirator and be able to wear respirator as evidenced by satisfactory completion of respirator fit test depending on specific job duties.

  • May be required to become DOT operator-qualified while working in the position.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Within six months selected applicant must pass written and skills evaluations for this position. Will be required to work on-call, overtime, rotating shifts, overtime weekends and holidays.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Gas Operations Representative I

Must have completed a minimum of one year experience or equivalent experience.

  • Knowledge of city, county, state and federal codes, laws, company standard practices and safety procedures relating to gas installation and usage.

  • Knowledge of construction procedures and techniques.

  • Knowledge of company safety policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of gas appliance/equipment operations and repairs.

  • Knowledge of math with decimals and fractions.

  • Ability in the use of dispatching equipment such as radios, telephones and computer terminals.

  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of construction equipment such as welders, grinders, drills, tampers, pavement breakers and hand tools.

  • Ability to pass required Operator Qualification requirements for the covered tasks performed.

  • Ability to read and interpret distribution maps.

  • Ability to lift and move up to 100 pounds.

  • Ability to see objects at close range and to determine the distance and relationship between objects.

  • Ability to smell to detect burning materials, natural gas, hazardous substances such as ammonia and solvents and toxic substances found in hazardous wastes.

  • Ability to handle emergencies and to respond to stressful situations.

  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Ability to understand and complete written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to complete reports in legible handwriting.

Education Requirements

Required degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree):

High School Diploma or GED

Valid Driver's License with a safe driving record is required.

Other Working Conditions

This position may require work on-call, rotating shifts, overtime, and work on weekends and holidays; work in extreme cold or hot temperatures on uneven or slippery surfaces. Some areas involve alternative work schedules, including flexible 9 or 4/10-hour day work week. Involves work around live gas. Exposure to non-ionizing radiation from welding, flashes and sunburns. May involve close eye contact work. May require long periods of standing or walking. Occasional Out-of-town work and overnight may be required.

After hire , employees in this job family are required to follow company safety practices and policies, including appropriate use of company provided personal protective equipment; become company qualified on plastic pipe fusion after attending company schooling; undergo random drug and/or alcohol testing with satisfactory results subject to DOT and company requirements; possess, or acquire within a reasonable amount of time, a commercial driver's license (CDL); obtain and maintain medical clearance to operate DOT-regulated vehicle, work with hazardous materials, and wear and properly use a respirator; comply with OSHA annual audiometric testing requirements; and become DOT operator-qualified.
