The Software Engineer develops, maintains, and enhances complex and diverse software systems (e.g., processing-intensive analytics, novel algorithm development, manipulation of extremely large data sets, real-time systems, and business management information systems) based upon documented requirements. Works individually or as part of a team. Reviews and tests software components for adherence to the design requirements and documents test results. Resolves software problem reports. Utilizes software development and software design methodologies appropriate to the development environment. Provides specific input to the software components of system design to include hardware/software trade-offs, software reuse, use of Commercial Off-the-shelf (COTS)/Government Offthe-shelf (GOTS) in place of new development, and requirements analysis and synthesis from system level to individual software components.
Responsibilities :
Design, develop and modify software systems, using scientific analysis and mathematical models to predict and measure outcome and consequences of design.
Design or implement complex algorithms requiring adherence to strict timing, system resource, or interface constraints; Perform quality control on team products.
Implement recommendations for improving documentation and software development process standards.

Confer with system engineers and hardware engineers to derive software requirements and to obtain information on project limitations and capabilities, performance requirements and interfaces.

Recommend new technologies and processes for complex software projects.
Serve as the technical lead of multiple software development teams.

This position is part of the Space Exploration Group (JSEG) support to the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract to the NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate.
Responsibilities:
The primary focus of this position is manufacturing large aluminum aerospace structures using both friction stir welding and fusion welding processes. Education and experience relevant to this position will be evaluated from that perspective. The position's primary responsibilities are to:
Develop welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles.
Conduct research and development investigations to develop and test new welding processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures, discover new patterns of welding phenomena, or to correlate and substantiate hypotheses.
Prepare technical reports resulting from research and development.
Establish welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-weld heating requirements which involve use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods and welding of critical joints.
Perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials.
Serve as project lead engineer to manage specific assigned customer welding development and manufacturing development projects.
Help other EM32 W&M Team customers understand and resolve problems related to their welding manufacturing processes.
The selected candidate will perform work under the guidance of more senior engineers/scientists. The selected candidate will perform assignments designed to develop professional working knowledge and abilities requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering/science tasks. The selected candidate may be assisted by technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments. As development progresses and where appropriate, routine assignments may be performed independently and results reviewed for accuracy. Qualifications:
BS degree in Welding Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a BS degree.
